1 In illo tempore audivit Herodes tetrarcha famam Jesu : 2 et ait pueris suis : Hic est Joannes Baptista : ipse surrexit a mortuis, et ideo virtutes operantur in eo. 1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report of Jesus: 2 and said to his children: This is John the Baptist: he has risen from the dead, and therefore virtues work in him. 1 En aquel tiempo, el tetrarca Herodes oyó la noticia de Jesús, 2 y dijo a sus hijos: Éste es Juan el Bautista: ha resucitado de entre los muertos, y por eso actúan en él las virtudes. 3 Herodes enim tenuit Joannem, et alligavit eum : et posuit in carcerem propter Herodiadem uxorem fratris sui. 3 For Herod held John and bound him, and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother's wife. 4 Dicebat enim illi Joannes : Non licet tibi habere eam. 4 For John said to him: It is not lawful for you to have her. 5 Et volens illum occidere, timuit populum : quia sicut prophetam eum habebant. 5 And wanting to kill him, he feared the people, because they regarded him as a prophet. 6 Die autem natalis Herodis saltavit filia Herodiadis in medio, et placuit Herodi : 7 unde cum juramento pollicitus est ei dare quodcumque postulasset ab eo. 6 On the day of Herod's birthday, Herodias' daughter danced in the middle, and Herod was pleased: 7 wherefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked of him. 8 At illa præmonita a matre sua : Da mihi, inquit, hic in disco caput Joannis Baptistæ. 8 But she was warned by her mother: Give me, said she, the head of John the Baptist here on a plate. 9 Et contristatus est rex : propter juramentum autem, et eos qui pariter recumbebant, jussit dari. 9 And the king was grieved: and because of the oath, and those who reclined together, he commanded to be given. 10 Misitque et decollavit Joannem in carcere. 10 And he sent and beheaded John in prison. 11 Et allatum est caput ejus in disco, et datum est puellæ, et attulit matri suæ. 11 And his head was brought in a dish, and it was given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. 12 Et accedentes discipuli ejus, tulerunt corpus ejus, et sepelierunt illud : et venientes nuntiaverunt Jesu. 12 And his disciples approaching, took his body, and buried it: and when they came, they told Jesus.

13 Quod cum audisset Jesus, secessit inde in navicula, in locum desertum seorsum : et cum audissent turbæ, secutæ sunt eum pedestres de civitatibus. 13 When Jesus heard this, he withdrew from thence in a boat to a deserted place by himself: and when the multitudes heard, the pedestrians from the cities followed him. 14 Et exiens vidit turbam multam, et misertus est eis, et curavit languidos eorum. 14 And going out, he saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on them, and nursed their sick. 15 Vespere autem facto, accesserunt ad eum discipuli ejus, dicentes : Desertus est locus, et hora jam præteriit : dimitte turbas, ut euntes in castella, emant sibi escas. 16 Jesus autem dixit eis : Non habent necesse ire : date illis vos manducare. 17 Responderunt ei : Non habemus hic nisi quinque panes et duos pisces. 18 Qui ait eis : Afferte mihi illos huc. 18 He said to them: Bring them here to me. 19 Et cum jussisset turbam discumbere super fœnum, acceptis quinque panibus et duobus piscibus, aspiciens in cælum benedixit, et fregit, et dedit discipulis panes, discipuli autem turbis. 20 Et manducaverunt omnes, et saturati sunt. Et tulerunt reliquias, duodecim cophinos fragmentorum plenos. 21 Manducantium autem fuit numerus quinque millia virorum, exceptis mulieribus et parvulis.

22 Et statim compulit Jesus discipulos ascendere in naviculam, et præcedere eum trans fretum, donec dimitteret turbas. 22 And immediately Jesus compelled the disciples to get into the boat, and to go before him across the sea, until he dismissed the crowds. 23 Et dimissa turba, ascendit in montem solus orare. Vespere autem facto solus erat ibi : 24 navicula autem in medio mari jactabatur fluctibus : erat enim contrarius ventus. And when evening came he was alone there: 24 and the boat was tossed in the middle of the sea by the waves: for the wind was contrary. 25 Quarta enim vigilia noctis, venit ad eos ambulans super mare. 25 For in the fourth watch of the night he came to them walking on the sea. 26 Et videntes eum super mare ambulantem, turbati sunt, dicentes : Quia phantasma est. 26 And when they saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying: Because it is a phantom. Et præ timore clamaverunt. And they cried out for fear. 27 Statimque Jesus locutus est eis, dicens : Habete fiduciam : ego sum, nolite timere. 27 And immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying: Have confidence: it is I, do not be afraid. 28 Respondens autem Petrus, dixit : Domine, si tu es, jube me ad te venire super aquas. 29 At ipse ait : Veni. Et descendens Petrus de navicula, ambulabat super aquam ut veniret ad Jesum. 30 Videns vero ventum validum, timuit : et cum cœpisset mergi, clamavit dicens : Domine, salvum me fac. 31 Et continuo Jesus extendens manum, apprehendit eum : et ait illi : Modicæ fidei, quare dubitasti ? 31 And straightway Jesus stretched forth his hand, and seized him: and said unto him: Thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt? 32 Et cum ascendissent in naviculam, cessavit ventus. 32 And when they had got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 Qui autem in navicula erant, venerunt, et adoraverunt eum, dicentes : Vere Filius Dei es. 33 And those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying: You are truly the Son of God. 34 Et cum transfretassent, venerunt in terram Genesar. 34 And when they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesar. 35 Et cum cognovissent eum viri loci illius, miserunt in universam regionem illam, et obtulerunt ei omnes male habentes : 36 et rogabant eum ut vel fimbriam vestimenti ejus tangerent. 35 And when the men of that place knew him, they sent into all that country, and offered him all who were ill: 36 and begged him that they might even touch the hem of his garment. Et quicumque tetigerunt, salvi facti sunt. And whosoever they touched were saved.
