Genesis 6

Caput 6

Genesis 6

**Caput 6**

Cumque coepissent homines multiplicari super terram, et filias procreassent, videntes filii Dei filias hominum quod essent pulchræ, acceperunt sibi uxores ex omnibus, quas elegerant. And when men began to multiply upon the earth, and to beget daughters, the sons of God seeing that the daughters of men were beautiful, took for themselves wives of all whom they had chosen. Dixitque Deus : Non permanebit spiritus meus in homine in æternum, quia caro est : eruntque dies illius centum viginti annorum. And God said: My spirit shall not abide in man for ever, because he is flesh: and his days were one hundred and twenty years. And there were giants upon the earth in those days: for after the sons of God had gone in unto the daughters of men, and they had borne them, these are mighty men, famous for ever. But God seeing that there was much malice in men on earth, and that every thought of the heart was intent on evil at all times, repented him that he had made man on earth. Et tactus dolore cordis intrinsecus, Delebo, inquit, hominem, quem creavi, a facie terræ, ab homine usque ad animantia, a reptili usque ad volucres cæli : poenitet enim me fecisse eos. And touched by the inner pain of his heart, he says, I will wipe out man whom I have created, from the face of the earth, from man to the animals, from the reptiles to the birds of the sky: for I will repent that I made them.

Noë vero invenit gratiam coram Domino. But Noah found grace before the Lord. These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just and perfect man in his generations; he walked with God. Et genuit tres filios, Sem, Cham et Japheth. And he gave birth to three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth. But the earth is corrupt before God, and is filled with iniquity. Cumque vidisset Deus terram esse corruptam (omnis quippe caro corruperat viam suam super terram), dixit ad Noë : Finis universæ carnis venit coram me : repleta est terra iniquitate a facie eorum, et ego disperdam eos cum terra. And when God saw that the earth was corrupt (for all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth), he said to Noah: The end of all flesh is coming before me: the earth is filled with iniquity from their face, and I will destroy them with the earth. Make yourself an ark of hewn wood; You shall make small houses in the ark, and line the inside and outside with bitumen. Et sic facies eam : trecentorum cubitorum erit longitudo arcæ, quinquaginta cubitorum latitudo, et triginta cubitorum altitudo illius. And thus you shall make it: the length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. You shall make a window in the ark, and you shall finish the top of it in a cubit; downwards, and a gloomy face in it.

Ecce ego adducam aquas diluvii super terram, ut interficiam omnem carnem, in qua spiritus vitæ est subter cælum : universa quæ in terra sunt, consumentur. Behold, I will bring the waters of the flood upon the earth, that I may kill all flesh in whom is the spirit of life under heaven: all that is on the earth shall be consumed. Ponamque foedus meum tecum : et ingredieris arcam tu et filii tui, uxor tua, et uxores filiorum tuorum tecum. And I will make my covenant with thee: and thou shalt enter into the ark, thou and thy sons, thy wife, and the wives of thy sons with thee. And of all living creatures of all flesh you shall bring two into the ark, that they may live with you: male and female. Of fowls according to their kind, and of beasts according to their kind, and of every creeping thing of the earth according to its kind: two of all shall go in with thee, that they may live. You shall therefore take with you of all kinds of food that can be eaten, and you shall carry it with you: and they shall be food for you as well as for them. Fecit igitur Noë omnia quæ præceperat illi Deus. Noah therefore did all that God commanded him.
