Genesis 19
**Caput 19**
Veneruntque duo angeli Sodomam vespere, et sedente Lot in foribus civitatis.
And the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gates of the city.
When he saw them, he got up and went to meet them: and he bowed down to the ground and said: I beseech you, my lords, return to the house of your children and remain there: wash your feet, and in the morning set out on your way.
Qui dixerunt : Minime, sed in platea manebimus.
They said: No, but we will remain in the street.
He drove them into the town to divert themselves to him: and entering his house he made a feast, and baked bread, and they ate.
And before they went to bed, the men of the city surrounded the house, from the boy to the old man, all the people together.
And they called Lot, and said unto him: Where are the men that came in unto thee by night?
educ illos huc, ut cognoscamus eos.
bring them here, that we may know them.
Egressus ad eos Lot, post tergum occludens ostium, ait: Nolite, quæso, fratres mei, nolite malum hoc facere.
Lot went out to them, closing the door behind him, and said: Do not, please, my brothers, do not do this evil.
Habeo duas filias, quæ necdum cognoverunt virum : educam eas ad vos, et abutimini eis sicut vobis placuerit, dummodo viris istis nihil mali faciatis, quia ingressi sunt sub umbra culminis mei.
I have two daughters who have not yet met a husband: I will bring them up to you, and you may abuse them as you please, provided you do no harm to these men, because they have entered under the shadow of my roof.
At illi dixerunt: Recede illuc.
But they said: Go back there.
And again: You have entered, they say, as a stranger; Do you judge?
te ergo ipsum magis quam hos affligemus.
therefore we will afflict you more than these.
Vimque faciebant Lot vehementissime : jamque prope erat ut effringerent fores.
And they used force against Lot with great violence: and it was almost time to break down the doors.
And behold, they sent out the man's hand, and brought Lot to them, and shut the door: and they smote those who were without with blindness, from the least to the greatest, so that they could not find the door.
And they said to Lot: Have you any of your own here?
Bring out your sons-in-law, or sons, or daughters, all who are yours, from this city: for we will destroy that place, because their cry has increased before the Lord, who sent us to destroy them.
Lot therefore went out, and spoke to his nobles who were about to receive his daughters, and said: Arise, get out of this place: for the Lord will destroy this city.
Et visus est eis quasi ludens loqui.
And he seemed to speak to them as if playing.
Cumque esset mane, cogebant eum angeli, dicentes: Surge, tolle uxorem tuam, et duas filias quas habes : ne et tu pariter pereas in scelere civitatis.
And when it was morning, the angels urged him, saying: Get up, take your wife and the two daughters you have: lest you also perish in the crime of the city.
Disguising him, they seized his hand, and the hand of his wife, and of his two daughters, inasmuch as the Lord spared him.
And they brought him out, and set him outside the city: and there they spoke to him, saying: Save your soul: do not look behind you, and do not stand in all the surrounding country: but save yourself in the mountain, lest you also perish together.
And Lot said to them: Please, my lord, because your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your mercy, which you have done for me, to save my life, and I cannot be saved on the mountain, lest evil overtake me and I die. , to which I can flee, small, and I will be saved in it: is it not small, and my soul will live?
And he said to him: Behold, even in this I have accepted your prayers, that the city for which you have spoken may not be overthrown.
Make haste, and save there: for I shall not be able to do anything until you enter there.
Idcirco vocatum est nomen urbis illius Segor.
Therefore the name of that city was called Segor.
The sun rose upon the earth, and Lot entered into Segor.
Therefore the Lord rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord from heaven: and he overthrew these cities, and all the surrounding country, all the inhabitants of the cities, and all the green things of the earth.
Respiciensque uxor ejus post se, versa est in statuam salis.
And his wife, looking behind him, turned into a statue of salt.
And Abraham, rising in the morning, where he had stood before with the Lord, beheld Sodom and Gomorrah, and all the land of that region: and he saw a ember rising from the earth like the smoke of a furnace.
For when God overthrew the cities of that region, he remembered Abraham, and delivered Lot from the overthrow of the cities in which he had dwelt.
And Lot went up from Segor, and stayed in the mountain, his two daughters also with him (for he was afraid to stay in Segor), and stayed in the cave himself, and his two daughters with him.
And the elder said to the younger: Our father is old, and there is no man left in the land who can come to us according to the custom of the whole earth.
Come, let us make him drunk with wine, and sleep with him, that we may save the seed from our father.
Dederunt itaque patri suo bibere vinum nocte illa.
So they gave their father wine to drink that night.
And the elder came in, and slept with his father; but he did not perceive, neither when his daughter lay down, nor when she rose.
The next day also the elder said to the younger: Behold, I slept with my father yesterday;
They also gave her father wine to drink that night, and the younger daughter came in and slept with him: and he did not even then realize when he had slept, or when she got up.
Conceperunt ergo duæ filiæ Lot de patre suo.
Then the two daughters of Lot conceived by their father.
Peperitque major filium, et vocavit nomen ejus Moab : ipse est pater Moabitarum usque in præsentem diem.
And the elder gave birth to a son, and called his name Moab: he is the father of the Moabites to this day.
Minor also gave birth to a son and called his name Ammon, that is, Son of my people: he is the father of the Ammonites to this day.
