Genesis 17

Caput 17

Cecidit Abram pronus in faciem.

**Caput 17** Kapitel 17 Chapter 17 capitulo 17 Chapitre 17

But after he had begun to be ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him, and said to him: I am the Almighty God: walk before me, and be perfect. And I will establish my covenant between me and you, and I will greatly multiply you. Cecidit Abram pronus in faciem. Abram fell on his face. Abram tomba face contre terre. And God said unto him: I am, and my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be the father of many nations. And your name shall no longer be called Abram, but you shall be called Abraham: for I have made you the father of many nations. And I will cause thee to grow exceedingly strong, and I will place thee among the nations, and kings shall come forth from thee. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and between thy seed after thee in their generations, an everlasting covenant: that I may be thy God, and thy seed after thee. And I will give you and your seed the land of your pilgrimage, all the land of Canaan for an eternal possession, and I will be their God.

Dixit iterum Deus ad Abraham: Et tu ergo custodies pactum meum, et semen tuum post te in generationibus suis. God said again to Abraham: And you shall therefore keep my covenant, and your seed after you in their generations. This is my covenant which you shall observe between me and you, and your seed after you: every male among you shall be circumcised: and you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, that it may be a sign of the covenant between me and you. Infans octo dierum circumcidetur in vobis, omne masculinum in generationibus vestris : tam vernaculus, quam emptitius circumcidetur, et quicumque non fuerit de stirpe vestra : eritque pactum meum in carne vestra in foedus æternum. An infant of eight days shall be circumcised among you, every male in your generations: both the native and the free will be circumcised, and whoever is not of your race: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. Masculus, cujus præputii caro circumcisa non fuerit, delebitur anima illa de populo suo : quia pactum meum irritum fecit. The male whose foreskin has not been circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people: because he has broken my covenant.

God also said to Abraham: You shall not call your wife Sarai, but Sarai. And I will bless him, and from her I will give you a son whom I am about to bless: and he will become nations, and kings of peoples will arise from him. Cecidit Abraham in faciem suam, et risit, dicens in corde suo : Putasne centenario nascetur filius? Abraham fell on his face and laughed, saying in his heart: Do you think that a son will be born to a centenarian? et Sara nonagenaria pariet? and will Sarah give birth at the age of ninety? Dixitque ad Deum : Utinam Ismaël vivat coram te. And he said to God: Would that Ishmael were alive before thee. Et ait Deus ad Abraham : Sara uxor tua pariet tibi filium, vocabisque nomen ejus Isaac, et constituam pactum meum illi in foedus sempiternum, et semini ejus post eum. And God said to Abraham: Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac, and I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant, and his seed after him. I also heard you about Ishmael: behold, I will bless him, and increase him, and greatly multiply him: he will beget twelve leaders, and I will make him into a great nation. Pactum vero meum statuam ad Isaac, quem pariet tibi Sara tempore isto in anno altero. But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this time in the second year. And when he had finished speaking with him, God came up from Abraham.

Tulit autem Abraham Ismaël filium suum, et omnes vernaculos domus suæ, universosque quos emerat, cunctos mares ex omnibus viris domus suæ : et circumcidit carnem præputii eorum statim in ipsa die, sicut præceperat ei Deus. And Abraham took his son Ishmael, and all the natives of his house, and all those whom he had bought, all the males of all the men of his house: and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins immediately on the very day, as God had commanded him. Abraham nonaginta et novem erat annorum quando circumcidit carnem præputii sui. Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin. Et Ismaël filius tredecim annos impleverat tempore circumcisionis suæ. And Ishmael the son was thirteen years old at the time of his circumcision. On the same day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised: and all the men of that house, both natives and bought ones, and foreigners alike, were circumcised.
