Genesis 13

Caput 13

Genesis 13

**Caput 13**

Abram therefore went up from Egypt, he and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, to the southern quarter. He was very rich in gold and silver. And he returned by the way by which he had come, from the south to Bethel, to the place where he had previously pitched the tabernacle between Bethel and Hai, in the place of the altar which he had made before: and there he invoked the name of the Lord. But Lot, who was with Abram, had flocks of sheep, and herds, and tents. Nor could the earth contain them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, and they could not dwell together. Hence there was a quarrel between the shepherds of the flocks, Abram and Lot. At that time the Chanaeans and the Perezeans lived in that land. Abram then said to Lot: Please let there be no strife between me and you, and between my shepherds and your shepherds: for we are brothers. Ecce universa terra coram te est : recede a me, obsecro : si ad sinistram ieris, ego dexteram tenebo : si tu dexteram elegeris, ego ad sinistram pergam. Behold, the whole earth is before you: depart from me, I beseech you: if you go to the left, I will hold the right hand: if you choose the right, I will go to the left. Elevatis itaque Lot oculis, vidit omnem circa regionem Jordanis, quæ universa irrigabatur antequam subverteret Dominus Sodomam et Gomorrham, sicut paradisus Domini, et sicut Ægyptus venientibus in Segor. And Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw all around the region of the Jordan, which was all irrigated before the Lord overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, like the paradise of the Lord, and like Egypt to those who came to Segor. And Lot chose for himself the region about the Jordan, and withdrew from the east: and they were separated from each other by their brother. But the people of Sodom were the worst, and exceedingly sinful before the Lord.

And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had been separated from him: Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are now, to the north and the south, to the east and the west. I will give you all the land that you see, and your seed forever. Faciamque semen tuum sicut pulverem terræ : si quis potest hominum numerare pulverem terræ, semen quoque tuum numerare poterit. And I will make your seed like the dust of the earth: if a man can number the dust of the earth, he will be able to number your seed also. Surge, et perambula terram in longitudine et in latitudine sua : quia tibi daturus sum eam. Movens igitur tabernaculum suum Abram, venit, et habitavit juxta convallem Mambre, quæ est in Hebron: ædificavitque ibi altare Domino. Abram therefore removed his tent, and came and dwelt near the valley of Mambre, which is in Hebron: and there he built an altar to the Lord.
