في قديم الزمان، كان هناك رجل يدعى جحا. Once upon a time, there was a man named Juha.

يعمل في قريته عند أحد تجار الحمير. He works in his village with a donkey dealer.

كانت مهمته تقتصر على إطعام الحيوانات وتنظيف الإسطبل من الفضلات. His task was limited to feeding the animals and cleaning the stables of droppings.

وذات يوم، مرض المسؤول عن نقل الحمير الى السوق. One day, the person responsible for transporting donkeys to the market fell ill.

فكلف صاحب الإسطبل جحا بالقيام بالمهمة. The owner of the stable Juha was assigned to do the job.

فكان عليه سياقة عشرة حمير إلى سوق المدينة حتى يقع عرضها للبيع. He had to drive ten donkeys to the city market so that they could be put up for sale.

في بداية الرحلة سار جحا على قدميه سائقا القطيع أمامه. At the beginning of the journey, Joha walked on his feet, driving the herd in front of him.

وكان بين الفينة والأخرى يقوم بعدّها لتّأكد من عدم فقدان أحدها. From time to time he would count them to make sure that none of them were lost.

" 1، 2، 3، 4، 5، 6، 7، 8، 9، عشرة حمير بالتمام والكمال" “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, ten asses completely and completely.”

ثم يتابع المسير. Then it continues.

وفي منتصف الطريق، شعر جحا بالتعب فامتطى أحد الحمير العشرة. Halfway through the road, Joha became tired and mounted one of the ten donkeys.

وبعد بضعة خطوات أراد التأكد مرة أخرى من عددها. After a few steps he wanted to check again how many.

" 1، 2، 3، 4، 5، 6، 7، 8، 9، آآآآآ 9. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, aaaaa 9.

يا إلاهي أين الحمار العاشر؟" Oh my God, where's the tenth donkey?"

ثم نزل من على ظهر حماره وهو يرتعد خوفا من فقدان أحدها، ثم قرر إعادة العد: Then he got down from the back of his donkey, trembling for fear of losing one, and then decided to repeat the count:

" 1، 2، 3، 4، 5، 6، 7، 8، 9، عشرة حمير. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, ten donkeys.

الحمد لله إنها مكتملة العدد، لعليا أخطأت العد" Praise be to God, she is complete in number, perhaps I misspelled the count.”

وهكذا كان كلما امتطى أحد الحمير وقام بعدها وجدها تسعة فيترجل ويعيد العد فيجدها عشرة. Thus, whenever a donkey rides and gets up, he finds it is nine, so he dismounts and repeats the count, finding it ten.

فقال في نفسه:

" أمشي على الأقدام وأكسب حمارا أفضل لي من أن أركب وأخسر حمارا" “It is better to walk and earn a donkey than to ride and lose a donkey.”

وهكذا قرر جحا اكمال الرحلة مشيا على الاقدام حتى لا يفقد الحمار العاشر. Thus, Juha decided to complete the journey on foot so as not to lose the tenth donkey.
