I have some ideas for the LingQ website!

Wouldn’t it be so cool to have an animation of snow falling down on the page while reading. Nothing too intrusive just something to give a fun cozy vibe while we are reading. Or maybe some kind of subtle snow animation when we move words to known. We spend so much time on LingQ reading that this would bring a relaxing immersive tone when we are reading. There could be a summer theme, a fall theme, a fog theme.

Not too keen as far as I am concerned and there would have to be an option to toggle it off because this could be distracting to some people.

However, I think other improvements should be given priority e.g the roadmap. But most of the developers’ time seems to be taken correcting bugs these days… Maybe working in a staging area as opposed to the live version of the website would help.

Exactly what I thought.
Fixing those bugs would relax me much more than any animation ever could.

“there would have to be an option to toggle it off”

This option would be added six months later. LingQ doesn’t have the best track record for not adding distracting features that can’t be dismissed or turned off.

As much as new features would be great, I would really just prefer the features that already exist to work as intended.

Such animation would only add visual distraction and potentially slow the site down without adding to the functionality of the site. Better to kept the code as lean and efficient as possible.

TBH it’s more of a 2000s vibe for me :))

But what about the stories where there is no snow involved ? It would completely ruin the immersion if I read a story a rainy day and there were a now animation.

That would just be annoying. LingQ should spend their time fixing bugs, adding features that make you learn faster and adding more languages.

I love the idea!

You might want to try listening to a cozy fireplace while you read. There are lots of videos on YouTube and they help me feel relaxed and get in the mood to learn languages.

I found a Chrome extension that can do it! Very cool!

Yep, that’s the way to go. For the record, I used the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox with this scrip: Tom’s Excellent Website Snow (using Greasemonkey) – Aurlog
(I cranked up the values, for the effect). But technically you should be able to create all of your desired effects, snow, rain, it’s just Javascript. No need to involve the LingQ developers in any of this.
