大宮 駅 も また 、新宿 駅 ほど の 規模 で は ない に せよ 巨大な ターミナル 駅 だった。 埼京 線 を 降りて 長い 階段 を 昇り 、駅 の 人 混 み の 中 を 乗り換え の 宇都宮 線 の ホーム に 向かった。 構内 は さらに 雪 の 匂い が 濃く 強く なって いて 、行き交う 人々 の 靴 は 雪 の 水 を 吸って ぐっしょり と 濡れて いた。 宇都宮 線 の ホーム も 帰宅 の 人々 で 溢れて いて 、電車 の ドア 位置 に なる 場所 に は 人々 の 長い 列 が できて いた。 僕 は 人 の 列 と は 離れた 場所 に ひとり で 立って 電車 を 待った。 行列 に 並んで も どうせ また 座れ ない のだ。 ──そこ で 初めて 、僕 は 嫌な 予感 が した。 構内 アナウンス の せい だ と 気づく まで 一瞬 の 間 が あいた。

「お 客 さま に お 知らせ いたします。 宇都宮 線 、小山 ・宇都宮 方面 行き 列車 は 、ただいま 雪 の ため 到着 が 八 分 ほど 遅れて います 」と アナウンス が 告げて いた。

その 瞬間 まで 、僕 は なぜ か 電車 が 遅れる なんて いう 可能 性 を 考え も し なかった のだ。 メモ と 腕 時計 を 見比べて みる。 メモ で は 五 時 四 分 の 電車 に 乗る はず が 、もう 五 時 十分だった。 急に 寒 さ が 増した ような 気 が して 、身震い が した。 二 分 後 に プァァーン ……と いう 長く 響く 警笛 と ともに 電車 の 光 が 差し込んで きた 時 も 、寒気 は 治まら なかった。

宇都宮 線 の 中 は 、小田急 線 より も 埼京 線 より も 混 み合って いた。 皆 そろそろ 一 日 の 仕事 なり 勉強 なり を 終え 、家 に 帰って いく 時間 な のだ。 車 輌 は 今日 乗って きた 他の 電車 に 比べる と ずっと 古く 、座席 は 四 人 掛け の ボックス 席 で 、それ は 長野 に いた 頃 に 地元 を 走って いた ローカル 線 を 思い出さ せた。 僕 は 片手 で 座席 に 付いて いる 握り を つかみ 、片手 を コート の ポケット に 入れ 、座席 に 挟まれた 通路 に 立って いた。 車 内 は 暖房 が 効いて いて 暖かく 、窓 は 曇り 四隅 に は びっしり と 水滴 が 張り付いて いた。 人々 は ぐったり と 疲れた よう に 一様に 無口で 、その 姿 は 蛍光 灯 に 照らされた 古い 車 輌 に しっくり と 馴染んで いる よう に 見えた。 僕 だけ が この 場所 に 相応しく ない よう に 思えて 、すこし でも その 違和感 が なくなる よう に と 僕 は できる だけ 息 を 潜め 、じっと 窓 の 外 を 流れる 景色 を 眺めて いた。

風景 から は すっかり 建物 が すくなく なり 、どこまでも 広がる 田園 は 完全に 雪 に 染まって いた。 ずっと 遠く の 闇 の 中 に 人家 の 灯り が まばらに 瞬いて いる の が 見えた。 赤く 明滅 する ランプ の ついた 巨大な 鉄塔 が 、遠方 の 山 の 峰 まで 等 間隔 に 並んで いた。 その 黒く 巨大な シルエット は 、まるで 雪原 に 整列 した 不穏な 巨人 の 兵士 の よう に 見えた。 ここ は もう 完全に 、僕 の 知ら ない 世界 な のだ。 そのような 風景 を 眺め ながら 、考える の は 明 里 と の 待ち合わせ 時間 の こと だった。 もし 約束 の 時間 に 僕 が 遅れて しまった と したら 、僕 に は それ を 明 里 に 知らせる 手段 が なかった。 当時 は 中学生 が 持つ ほど に は 携帯 電話 は 普及 して い なかった し 、僕 は 明 里 の 引っ越し 先 の 電話 番号 を 知ら なかった。 窓 の 外 の 雪 は ますます 勢い を 増して いった。

次の 乗り換え と なる 小山 駅 に 着く まで の 間 、本来 なら 一 時間 の ところ を 電車 は じりじり と 遅れ ながら 走った。 駅 と 駅 と の 間 の 距離 は 都 内 の 路線 から は 信じられ ない くらい 遠く 離れて いて 、ひと 駅 ごと に 電車 は 信じられ ない くらい 長い 時間 停車 した。 その たび に 、車 内 に は いつも 同じ アナウンス が 流れた。 「お 客 さま に お 断り と お 詫び 申し上げます。 後続 列車 遅延 の ため 、この 列車 は 当 駅 にて しばらく の 間 停車 いたします。 お 急ぎ の ところたいへん ご 迷惑 を お かけ いたします が 、今 しばらく お 待ち ください……」

僕 は 何度 も なんど も 繰り返し 時計 を 見て 、まだ 七 時 に なら ない よう に と 強く 祈り 、それ でも 距離 が 縮まら ない まま に 時間 だけ が 確実に 経って いき 、その たび に 何 か 見え ない 力 で 締め付けられる よう に 全身 が ど くどく と 鈍く 痛んだ。 まるで 僕 の 周囲 に 目 に 見え ない 空気 の 檻 が あり 、それ が だんだん 狭まって くる ような 気分 だった。

待ち合わせ に 間に合わ ない の は 、もう 確実だった。

とうとう 約束 の 七 時 に なった 時 、電車 は まだ 小山 駅 に さえ 着く こと が でき ず に 、小山 駅 から 二 つ 手前 の 野木 と いう 駅 に 停車 して いた。 明 里 の 待つ 岩舟 駅 は 、小山 駅 で 乗り換えて から さらに 電車 で 二十 分 かかる 距離 な のだ。 大宮 駅 を 出て から 車中 で の この 二 時間 、どうにも なら ない 焦り と 絶望 で 、僕 の 気持ち は びりびり と 張り詰め 続けて いた。 これほど 長く 辛い 時間 を 、今 まで の 人生 で 経験 した こと が なかった。 今 の 車 内 が 寒い の か 暑い の か 、もう よく 分から なかった。 感じる の は 車 輌 に 漂う 深い 夜 の 匂い と 、昼食 以降 何も 食べて いない こと に よる 空腹だった。 気づけば 車 内 は いつの間にか 人 も まばらで 、立って いる の は 僕 ひとり だけ だった。 僕 は 近く の 誰 も 座って いない ボックス 席 に ど さ り と 腰 を 下ろした。 途端 に 足 が ジン と 鈍く 痺れ 、体 の 深い ところ から 全身 の 皮膚 に 疲れ が 湧き出て きた。 体中 に 不自然に 力 が 入って いて 、それ を 上手く 抜く こと が でき なかった。 僕 は コート の ポケット から 明 里 へ の 手紙 を 取り出して 、じっと 眺めた。 約束 の 時間 を 過ぎて 、きっと 明 里 は 今頃 不安に なり 始めて いる。 明 里 と の 最後 の 電話 を 思い出す。 どうして いつも こんな こと に なっちゃ うんだ。

野木 駅 に は それ から たっぷり 十五 分 ほど も 停車 して 、電車 は ふたたび 動き 始めた。

電車 が ようやく 小山 駅 に 着いた の は 、七 時 四十 分 を 過ぎた 頃 だった。 電車 を 降りて 、乗り換え と なる 両 毛 線 の ホーム まで 走った。 役 に 立た なく なった メモ は 丸めて ホーム の ゴミ 箱 に 捨てた。

小山 駅 は 建物 ばかり 大きかった が 、人 は まばらだった。 構内 を 走り 過ぎる 時 、待 合い 広場 の ような 場所 に ストーブ を 中心 に 何 人 か が 椅子 に 座り込んで いる の が 見えた。 これ から 家族 が 車 で 迎え に 来たり する のだろう か。 やはり 彼ら は この 風景 に 自然に 溶け込んで いる よう に 見えた。 僕 だけ が 焦燥 に 駆られて いる。

両 毛 線 の ホーム は 、階段 を 下りて 地下 通路 の ような 場所 を くぐり抜けた その先 に あった。 地面 は 飾り気 の ない 剥きだしの コンクリート で 、太い コンクリート の 四角い 柱 が 等 間隔 に 並び 、天井 に は 何 本もの パイプ が 絡み合って 伸びて いた。 柱 を 挟んだ ホーム の 両側 は 吹き抜け に なって いて 、オォォォ と いう 吹雪 の 低い 唸り が 空間 を 満たして いる。 青白い 蛍光 灯 の 光 が 、この トンネル の よう に ぽっかり あいた 空間 を ぼんやり と 照らして いた。 キオスク の シャッター は 固く 閉じられて いる。 まるで 見当違いの 場所 に 迷い 込んで しまった ような 気持ち に なった が 、きちんと 何 人 か の 乗客 が ホーム で 電車 を 待って いた。 小さな 立ち食い そば 屋 と 二 つ 並んだ 自動 販売 機 の 黄 色っぽい 光 だけ は いくぶん 暖か そうに 見えた が 、全体 と して は とても 冷えびえ と した 場所 だった。

「ただいま 両 毛 線 は 雪 の ため 、大幅な 遅れ を もって 運転 して おります。 お 客 さま に はたいへん ご 迷惑 を お かけ いたして おります。 列車 到着 まで 今 しばらく お 待ち ください 」と いう 無表情な アナウンス が ホーム に 反響 して いた。 僕 は すこし でも 寒 さ を 防ぐ ため に コート の フード を 頭 に かぶり 、風 を よける よう に コンクリート の 柱 に もたれて じっと 電車 が 来る の を 待った。 コンクリート の 足元 から 鋭い 冷気 が 全身 に 這い上がって きて いた。 明 里 を 待た せて いる 焦り と 体温 を 奪い 続ける 寒 さ と 刺す ような 空腹 と で 、僕 の 身体 は 硬く こわばって いく。 そば 屋 の カウンター に 、ふた り の サラリーマン が 立って そば を 食べて いる の が 見えた。 そば を 食べよう か と 思い 、でも 明 里 も 空腹 を 抱えて 僕 を 待って いる の かも しれ ない と 考え 、僕 だけ が 食事 を 摂る わけに は いか ない と 思い 直した。 せめて 温かい 缶 コーヒー を 飲む こと に して 、自動 販売 機 の 前 まで 歩いた。 コート の ポケット から 財布 を 取り出そう と した 時 に 、明 里 に 渡す ため の 手紙 が こぼれ落ちた。

今に して 思えば 、あの 出来事 が なかった と して も 、それ でも 手紙 を 明 里 に 渡す こと に して いた か どう か は 分から ない。 どちら に して も いろいろな 結果 は 変わら なかった んじゃ ない か と も 思う。 僕たち の 人生 は 嫌に なる くらい 膨大な 出来事 の 集積 であり 、あの 手紙 は その 中 で の たった 一 つ の 要素 に 過 すぎ ない から だ。 結局 の ところ 、どのような 強い 想い も 長い 時間 軸 の 中 で ゆっくり と 変わって いく のだ。 手紙 を 渡せた に せよ 、渡せ なかった に せよ。

財布 を 取り出す 時 に ポケット から こぼれ 出た 手紙 は 、その 瞬間 の 強風 に 吹き飛ばさ れ 、あっという間 に ホーム を 抜けて 夜 の 闇 に 消えた。 その とたん 、僕 は ほとんど 泣き出し そうに なって しまった。 反射 的に その場で うつむいて 歯 を 食いしばり 、とにかく 涙 を こらえた。 缶 コーヒー は 買わ なかった。

手紙 から 想像 する 明 里 は 、なぜ か いつも ひとり だった。 そして 結局 は 僕 も 同じ よう に ひとり だった のだ 、と 僕 は 思う。 学校 に は 何 人 も の 友人 が いた けれど 、今 この よう に 、フード で 顔 を 隠し 誰 も いない 車 輌 の 座席 に ひとり で 座り込んで いる 僕 が 、本当の 僕 の 姿 だった のだ。 電車 の 中 は 暖房 が 効いて いた はずだ けれど 、乗客 が まばら の たった 四 両 編成 の この 車 輌 の 中 は 、とてつもなく 寒々 しい 空間 だった。 どう 表現 すれば いい のだろう ──、こんなに も 酷 い 時間 を 、僕 は それ まで 経験 した こと が なかった。 広い ボックス 席 に 座った まま 、僕 は 体 を きつく 丸めて 歯 を 食いしばり 、ただ とにかく 泣か ない よう に 、悪意 の 固まり の ような 時間 に 必死に 耐えて いる しか なかった。 明 里 が ひとり だけ で 寒い 駅 の 構内 で 僕 を 待ち 続けて いる と 思う と 、彼女 の 心細 さ を 想像 する と 、僕 は 気 が 狂い そうだった。 明 里 が もう 待って い なければ いい のに 、家 に 帰って いて くれれば いい のに と 、僕 は 強く つよく 願った。
