40. A Miraculous Hail-storm (primer)
tum Hercules constituit compellere boves
Then Hercules decided to drive the cattle
per Hispaniam et Liguriam ;
through Spain and Liguria ;
postquam igitur omnia parata sunt,
After therefore everything were prepared,
transportavit boves ex insula ad continentem.
he carried over the oxen from the island to the mainland.
Ligures autem, bellicosissima gens ,
Now the Ligurians, a most warlike people,
dum ille facit iter per fines eorum,
while he is making journey through the territories of them,
coegerunt magnas copias
brought together large forces
atque prohibebant eum progredi longius .
and were preventing him[=trying to prevent] to advance farther .
Hercules habebat magnam difficultatem
Hercules had great difficulty,
nam barbari stabant in superioribus locis
for the barbarians were standing in higher places
et coniciebant saxa tela-que in eum.
and were throwing rocks and-missiles into him .
ille quidem deposuerat paene omnem spem salutis,
He indeed had laid aside almost all hope of safety,
sed opportunissimo tempore
but at a most opportune time
Iuppiter demisit e caelo. imbrem ingentium lapidum.
Jupiter sent down from the sky a shower of enormous stones.
hi ceciderunt tanta vi ut
These fell with such great force that
occiderint magnum numerum Ligurum ;
they killed a great number of Ligurians ;
Hercules tamen ipse
However Hercules himself
( quod consuevit accidere in talibus rebus)
( what was accustomed to happen in such things)
cepit nihil incommodi .
received nothing of harm .
