27 The Fate of Pholus (primer)
Postquam reliqui fugerunt, Pholus egressus est ex spelunca
After the others fled, Pholus went out from the cave
et spectabat corpora eorum qui interfecti erant sagittis.
and looked at the bodies of those who had been killed by the arrows.
autem miratus est magnopere
And he wondered greatly
quod exanimati erant tam levi vulnere,
that they had been killed by so light a wound,
et quaerebat causam eius rei ,
and he sought the reason of this thing .
igitur adiit ad locum ubi cadaver cuiusdam centauri iacebat,
Therefore he went to to the place where the dead body of a certain centaur was lying,
et traxit sagittam e vulnere .
and drew the arrow out of the wound .
Haec tamen lapsa est e manibus eius
This however slipped out of the hands of him
sive casu sive consilio deorum,
whether by chance or by plan of the gods
et leviter vulneravit pedem .
and lightly wounded his foot.
ille extemplo sensit gravem dolorem per omnia membra,
He immediately felt heavy pain through all his limbs,
et post breve tempus exanimatus est vi veneni .
and after a short time he was killed by the power of the poison.
Mox Hercules, qui secutus erat reliquos centauros,
Soon Hercules, who had followed the remaining centaurs,
rediit ad speluncam ,
he came back to the cave,
et cum magno dolore vidit Pholum mortuum.
and with great distress he saw Pholus dead.
cum multis lacrimis dedit corpus amici ad sepulturam;
with many tears he gave the body of his friend to burial;
tum, postquam exhausit alterum poculum vini,
then, after he drained another cup of wine,
dedit se somno.
he gave himself to sleep.
