26 The Fight with the Centaurs (primer)
Simul atque amphora aperta est,
As soon as the jar was opened,
iucundissimus odor diffusus est undique;
a most wonderful smell was spread around everywhere;
nam vinum erat suavissimum.
for the wine was very pleasant .
Centauri senserunt notum odorem
The centaurs recognised the well-known smell
et omnes convenerunt ad locum .
and all came together to the place.
ubi pervenerunt ad speluncam,
When they arrived to the cave,
erant magnopere irati quod viderunt Herculem bibentem.
they were greatly angry because they saw Hercules drinking.
Tum rapuerunt arma et volebant interficere Pholum.
Then they seized weapons and wanted to kill Pholus.
Hercules tamen constitit in aditu speluncae
Hercules however stood in the entrance of the cave
et sustinebat fortissime impetum eorum .
and withstood most vigorously the attack of them.
coniecit ardentes faces in eos ;
He threw burning firebrands into them
etiam vulneravit multos suis sagittis.
also he wounded many with his arrows.
hae autem sagittae erant eaedem
Now these arrows were the same
quae olim imbutae erant sanguine Hydrae,
which previously had been washed with the blood of the Hydra,
omnes igitur quos ille vulneraverat sagittis
all therefore whom he had wounded with arrows
absumpti sunt statim veneno ;
were killed immediately by the poison.
reliqui autem ubi viderunt hoc,
Then the others when they saw this,
verterunt terga et petierunt salutem fuga.
turned their backs and sought safety in flight.
