Hercules dum iter in Arcadiam facit, ad eam regionem venit quam centauri incolebant. In the Arcady and makes the Hercules, as he was journeying, he came in unto her, the country of which the inhabitants of the centaur.

Cum nox iam appeteret, ad speluncam devertit in qua centaurus quidam, nomine Pholus, habitabat. Erat autem in spelunca magna amphora vino optimo repleta, quam centauri ibi deposuerant. And there was in the cave a large vessel filled with the best wine, which the centaurs had deposited there.

Pholus igitur hoc vinum dare nolebat, quod reliquos centauros timebat; nullum tamen vinum praeter hoc in spelunca habebat. Pholus, therefore, was unwilling to give this wine, because he feared the rest of the centaurs; but he had no wine besides this in the cave.

"Hoc vinum," inquit, "mihi commissum est. "This wine," he says, "has been entrusted to me." Si igitur hoc dabo, centauri me interficient." If therefore I will give this, the centaurs will kill me. Hercules tamen eum inrisit, et ipse poculum vini de amphora hausit. Hercules, however, laughed at him, and himself drank the cup of wine from the bottle.
