22 Second Labour: the Lernean Hydra (primer)
By a little afterwards he was ordered by Eurystheus to kill the Hydra .
Now this was a monster to which were nine heads .
Hercules therefore together with his friend Iolaus set out to the Lernaean marsh,
in qua Hydra habitabat.
in which the Hydra lived
Mox in-venit monstrum
Soon he found the monster
et quamquam res erat magni periculi,
and although the thing was of great danger,
comprehendit collum eius sinistra manu.
he seized the neck of it with his left hand.
Tum dextra coepit abscidere novem capita;
Then with the right he began to cut off the nine heads;
tamen quotiens fecerat hoc, nova capita exoriebantur.
but as often as he had done this, new heads appeared.
Diu laborabat frustra ; tandem destitit hoc conatu..
For a long time he struggled in vain; finally he ceased from this effort .
Deinde constituit succidere arbores et accendere ignem
Then he decided to cut down trees and to light fire.
He did this quickly, and after the logs caught fire,
ardente face adussit colla unde capita exoriebantur .
with a blazing firebrand he set fire to the necks from which the heads were appearing .
nec tamen fecit haec sine magno labore;
Nor however did he do these things without a great struggle;
enim ingens cancer venit auxilio Hydrae
for a huge crab came for a help to the Hydrae
which, while Hercules cut off the heads, was biting the ankles of him.
Postquam interfecit monstrum tali modo,
After he killed the monster in such a way,
imbuit suas sagittas sanguine eius,
he washed his arrows with the blood of it,
itaque reddidit mortiferas.
and so he made < them> death-bearing.
