19 Hercules Consults the Oracle (primer)
Hercules magnopere cupiebat expiare tantum scelus .
Hercules greatly was desiring to cleanse so great a crime .
igitur constituit ire ad Delphicum oraculum;
Therefore he decided to go to the Delphic oracle;
enim hoc oraculum erat celeberrimum omnium.
for this oracle was most famous of all.
ibi erat templum Apollinis ornatum plurimis donis.
There there was a temple of Apollo adorned with very many gifts.
In hoc templo sedebat quaedam femina , nomine Pythia,
In this temple sat a certain woman, by name Pythia,
et dabat consilium eis qui veniebant ad oraculum.
and she gave advice to those people who came to the oracle .
autem haec femina docebatur ab Apolline ipso,
Now this woman was instructed by Apollo himself,
et nuntiabat hominibus voluntatem dei.
and announced to men the will of the god.
Hercules igitur, qui colebat Apollinem maxime, venit huc.
Hercules therefore, who honoured Apollo very greatly, came to this place.
Tum exposuit totam rem, neque celavit scelus.
Then he set out the entire matter, and not he concealed the crime.
