18 Madness and Murder (primer)
Post hoc proelium Hercules reduxit suas copias ad urbem.
After this battle Hercules led back his forces to the city.
Omnes Thebani gaudebant maxime propter victoriam ;
All the Thebans were rejoicing most greatly on account of the victory
autem Creon decoravit Herculem cum magno honore,
And Creon glorified Hercules with great honour,
atque dedit suam filiam ei in matrimonium.
and gave his daughter to him into marriage.
Hercules agebat laetam vitam cum sua uxore ;
Hercules led a happy life with his wife;
sed post paucos annos subito incidit in furorem ,
but after a few years suddenly he fell into madness,
atque occidit suos liberos ipse sua manu.
and he killed his own children himself with his own hand.
Post breve tempus reductus est ad sanitatem,
After a short time he was brought back to sanity ,
et propter hoc facinus adfectus est magno dolore;
and on account of this crime he was afflicted with great grief;
mox effugit ex urbe et recepit se in silvas;
soon he fled from the city and took himself into the woods.
enim cives nolebant habere sermonem cum eo.
For citizens were unwilling to have conversation with him.
