1.7 iii The Watchers Sleep (primer)

ὡς δέ πίνοντες ἠσπάζοντο αὐτὸν φιλοφρόνως,

And since <they> drinking they welcomed him < so> kindly, ἐπ-έδωκεν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἄλλον τῶν ἀσκῶν.

he gave to them also another of the wine-skins.

χρησάμενοι δὲ τῷ ποτῷ πολλῷ οἱ φύλακες

And indulging in the drinking a lot the guards

ὑπερ-εμεθύσθησαν,

became extremely drunk,

καὶ δὴ καὶ κρατηθέντες ὑπὸ τοῦ ὕπνου

and moreover overcome by sleep

κατ-εκοιμήθησαν αὐτοῦ, ἐνθάπερ ἔπινον·

they fell into slumber right there, where they were drinking.

νυκτὸς ἤδη γενομένης,

with night now having come, [ gen absolute]

ὁ δὲ οὖν οὐ μόνον κατ-έλυσεν τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ,

then he not only released the body of his brother,

ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐπὶ λύμῃ

but also by way of insult

ἐξύρησε τὰς δεξιᾶς παρηίδας πάντων τῶν φυλάκων.

shaved the right cheeks of all the guards.

καὶ οὕτω δὴ

And in this way then

ἐπι-θεὶς τὸν νέκυν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὄνους

having placed the corpse onto the donkeys

ἀπ-ήλαυνεν ἐπι οἴκου

he drove off homeward,

ἐπι-τελέσας τὰ προς-ταχθέντα τῇ μητρὶ .

having carried out the things ordered by his mother .
