1.3 The Keystone (primer)

Οἱ δὲ υἱοὶ

And the sons,

οὐ μέλλοντες πολὺν δὴ χρόνον ,

not delaying much time,

ἐπῆλθον νυκτὸς ἐπὶ τὰ βασίλεια·

they came by night to the palace,

ἀν-ευρόντες δὲ τὸν λίθον ἐπὶ τῷ οἰκοδομήματι,

and having found the stone in the chamber,

καὶ ῥᾳδίως δὴ μετα-χειρισάμενοι τὸ πρᾶγμα,

and very easily having managed the task,

ἐξ-ηνέγκοντο πολλὰ τῶν χρημάτων.

they carried away many of the treasures.

ὡς δὲ αῦ ὁ βασιλεὺς ἔτυχεν ἀνοίξας τὸ οἴκημα,

And when next the king he happened having opened the chamber,

ἐθαύμασε μὲν, ὡς εἰκὸς,

he was astonished, as < was> likely, ἰδὼν τὰ ἀγγεῖα ἐνδεέστερα,

seeing the jars nearly empty;

ὅμως δὲ οὐκ εἴχεν αἰτιάσασθαι οὐδένα τῆς κλοπῆς ·

however, he was not able to accuse no-one of the theft.

τά γὰρ σήμαντρα ἦν τε σῶα

For the door-seals were intact

τε τό οἴκημα κεκλειμένον·

and the chamber locked up.

ὡς δὲ αὐτῷ ἀνοίξαντι και δὶς καὶ τρὶς,

And when to him, having opened a second time and a third time,

τᾶ χρήματα ἀεὶ ἐφαίνετο ἐλάσσω,

the treasures always appeared fewer,

( οἱ γὰρ κλέπται οὐκ ἐπαύοντο ὑφ-αιροῦντες)

( for the thieves did not cease stealing)

τότε δῆ ἐποίησε τάδε .

then he did these < things>:
