1.10 Wit Wins the Day (primer)

ἡ δὲ ὡς ἤκουσεν, ἥπτετο μὲν αὐτοῦ·
And she when she heard, was grabbing of him,
ὁ δὲ φὼρ προ-έτεινεν αὐτῇ τὴν χεῖρα τοῦ νεκροῦ ·
but the thief stretched out to her the hand of the dead man.
ἡ δὲ,
And she,
διὰ τὴν σπουδὴν οὐ κατ-ιδοῦσα σαφῶς ,
on account of her eagerness not seeing clearly,
ἐπι-λαβομένη εἴχετο αὐτῆς,
having seized held tight of [=to] it.
ἐνόμισε γὰρ
For she thought < herself> ἀντ-έχεσθαι τῆς χειρὸς ἐκείνου αὐτοῦ ·
to be holding the hand of him himself.
ὁ μὲν οὖν φὼρ
And so the thief
προ-έμενος αὐτῇ ταύτην δὴ τὴν χεῖρα
having put out to her this hand
ᾤχετο φεύγων διὰ θυρῶν.
he went off escaping through the doors.
