Breaking News English .com, Blinded Police Hero Found Dead At Home (2nd March, 2012)

An English policeman who was shot and blinded by a gunman has been found dead at his house in the north of England. The body of David Rathband, 44, was found by police officers at his home. They went to his house because no one had seen him for a few days. Mr Rathband was shot in the face at close range while sitting in his police car in July 2010. He lost his sight in both his eyes and suffered many facial injuries. The man who shot him died several days later in a 6-hour shootout with police.

Mister Rathband became a hero as he battled with his blindness and started a charity to help other police officers injured while doing their job. British Prime Minister David Cameron said he was an "extraordinarily brave man" who did "an enormous amount for charity". Another tribute came from blind politician David Blunkett, who said: "[Rathband] was a man who was struggling inside as well as with the practicalities of coping with blindness. He was actually coping extremely well, but he didn't believe so.”
