the united states capitol grounds designed by Frederick Law Olmstead are as important to the history of the Capitol as the building of the following years of little care and forethought of the Capitals grounds and construction of the extensions of the building in the 1850s the grounds were in need of significant improvement in 1874 Frederick Law Olmsted designer of New York Central Park and other notable landscapes was commissioned to plan and oversee the project Olmsted was determined that the grounds should complement the building this original plan showing East on the top of the drawing shows the arrangement of paths fountains trees and terraces laid out in 1874 homesteads plan provided an intelligent system for access to the building while at the same time arranging walks drives and vegetation to improve the monumentality and dignity of the capital homestead intended for the grounds to serve as an influential example of the art of landscape architecture how he achieved this is a richly instructive study in landscape design the summerhouse a brick structure set into the sloping hillside of the west front has offered rest and shelter to travelers for over a century constructed to provide comfort for those who explore the area on foot it is also a pleasant location from which to appreciate the Capitals classical architecture and the landscaping that surrounds it much of Olmsted's landscape legacy is architectural rather than horticultural some of Olmstead significant hardscape elements can be found on the east front plaza of the Capitol recently restored and modernized as part of the building of the Capitol Visitor Center these elements include the Olmstead fountains and lanterns the fountains have recently been modernized to include an anemometer that lowers the water pressure as winds rise the design of the underground Capitol Visitor Center also remain consistent with Olmsted's vision of the Capitol as a jewel and the focus of all who visit Olmstead also addressed an architectural problem that had persisted for some years from the West the direction in which the city was clearly growing the earthen terraces at the building's base made it seem inadequately supported at the top of the hill Olmstead solution was to construct marble terraces on the north west and south sides of the building causing it to gain greatly in the supreme qualities of stability endurance and repose his design for these features came in 1875 and after extensive study it was approved most of the work on the east side of the grounds was completed in 1879 and work focused on the west side this included the stone walls on the west side of the grounds and the red granite lamp piers placed at the east entrance from Pennsylvania Avenue today the architect of the Capitol serves as a steward of the Capitol grounds ensuring the legacy of Olmstead by maintaining many of the original hardscape elements and preserving the landscape vision of Olmstead more than a century ago
