[MUSIC PLAYING] The first textile mills appeared in the Blackstone River Valley in 1790. As the mills became successful, they needed a faster and more reliable transportation system to move their goods throughout the Valley. In 1824, construction began on the Blackstone Canal, which would stretch 45 miles from the docks of Providence to the center of Worcester. It took four years for workers to dig the canal by hand, using picks and shovels, breaking rocks with sledgehammers and star drills. When the canal opened, barges carried raw materials to the mills and took the finished goods back to market. Going three miles per hour, it took two days for the horses to haul the barges from Providence to Worcester. Today, going three miles per hour along the Blackstone Canal is a lot more fun.
