the MGH administrative fellowship has served the hospital as an important leadership development program for over 40 years this program is an opportunity for us to identify talented individuals who are just beginning their careers and immerse them in a variety of health care environments over two years our fellows rotate through seven departments including the president's office we are deliberate in the experiences we provide to our fellows but also encourage them to explore their own interests our leadership is highly invested in developing these fellows and as such we often hire them and two important leadership roles after they graduate from the program many of our program and department directors and two of our senior vice presidents were fellows who have made their careers here we are confident that this program will continue to provide us with a steady stream of talented leadership for many years to come as a former administrative fellow and now as a preceptor for the physicians organization rotation I can confidently say that this program is immensely impactful for both the fellows and the MGH community at large fellows here are consistently involved in some of the highest priority projects they assisted with plans to build and transition to the new Lander building they engage in long-term emergency preparedness efforts and they collaborated with teams throughout the hospital to improve quality safety and the patient experience those are truly ingrained in the fabric of Mass General over two years and several rotations fellows work with hospital executives physician and nursing leaders departmental heads and frontline staff at our main campus and satellite location one of the core fellowship rotations is patient care services during which fellows come to intimately understand how patient care is delivered at the hospital in the past fellows have spent time and perioperative services the emergency department the ICU and various inpatient units care delivery the environment of care and information technology are just a few of the arenas in which fellows undertake projects in partnership with frontline staff nursing directors and associate chief nurses in addition to nursing patient care services at Mass General encompasses occupational and physical therapy chaplaincy Social Work interpreter services Global Health and more our fellows have the opportunities to learn about and get involved with the diverse set of leaders and teams that contribute to the delivery of exemplary patient care the operations rotation exposes fellows to both clinical and behind-the-scenes operations this is a unique opportunity to see the collaboration that occurs between physician nursing and administrative leaders across the institution and to see how materials management buildings and grounds police and security and all the other support services facilitate consistent delivery of high-quality care one of the most exciting parts of the fellowship experience is the opportunity to join various executive level meetings at the MGH and its parent organization Partners HealthCare it is important for fellows to gain an understanding of how decisions are made within and between institutions that are members of partners and how decisions at one level act or even conflict but those at another exposure to high-level strategic planning and leadership is a key development aspect of the program our fellows are valued shining stars at our institution they embody the passion hardwork and collaborative spirit that is characteristic of the MGH I've been co-director for the MGH administrative fellowship for twenty years and before that served as a preceptor for many years I truly enjoy watching fellows grow becoming leaders in health care and I'm especially glad to see so many remain here at the MGH I began the fellowship at Mass General in 1993 I truly valued the learning opportunities presented by each rotation more importantly the fellowship helped me explore the world of Finance which I previously had not been interested in through that rotation I became to understand the intricate relationship between the numbers in his spreadsheet and the delivery of patient care without the fellowship I never would have thought to explore a career in healthcare finance we structured the program so that fellows are connected with rotation specific directors these individuals service day-to-day managers providing real work assignments Shadowman opportunities in very project in addition a different placement president the service preceptor for each rotation overseeing the fellows work providing guidance and insurance sufficient opportunity to pursue projects that interesting after graduation fellows find their way into a wide variety of roles and specialized areas across the hospital I think many fellows were reflect on their experience and conclude that without the fellowship they would not have received the same level of opportunity for challenging assignments built as strong a professional network or had the same chances for promotion or advancement the administrative fellowship has been an incredibly important part of my career it launched me into a leadership role two years after completing my graduate degree and set me up for an exciting progression with a rapidly increasing scope of responsibilities now whenever I am hiring or whenever I have an interesting project I always think of the fellows because I know there are fast learners and incredibly bright with well-rounded exposure in fact after I transitioned out of my last role I was very pleased that a former fellow that I had hired a few years ago succeeded me as executive director so the department had two consecutive former fellows in its most senior leadership role I think this is one example of the terrific pipeline of leadership talent that MGH is created through this administrative fellowship program we have had two successive fellowship graduates join the department of radiation oncology as my administrative counterparts the value of the program as it prepares individuals to take on challenging leadership roles is incredibly apparent these individuals possess deep organizational understanding that is unique even within the hospital and they arrive to their new roles ready to work interact and lead one of the best things about the energy administrative fellowship is the extensive network of current and alumni fellows graduates of the program many of them now both senior leadership roles are always successful happy to provide connectivity product work career opportunities there are many opportunities both in and outside of the MGH for fellows and alumni to get together from the more formal fellowship interview and graduation day to quarterly journal clubs conferences summer outings and winter get together the fellows always make an effort to get together and enjoy Boston at any given time there's a fellowship event coming up whether bowling trying a new restaurant attending a free summer concert on the Charles we're going to a Patriots game from day one the MGH fellowship boasts a community of people who are welcoming collaborative helpful and passionate about making a difference in healthcare it's clear that the relationships you form with others who have also had the fortunate experience of being an MGH administrative fellow last well beyond graduation and really forever
