Autism, 5.10 (V) Course Wrap-Up

5.10 (V) Course Wrap-Up

Thank you very much for joining me in this course on Autism Spectrum Disorders. It's been a wonderful experience developing this course in collaboration with the UC Davis Mind Institute and UC Davis Extension. I hope you found the materials useful and enjoyable. While our understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders and other neuro-developmental disabilities has come a long way in the past 50 or so years, there's still a lot to learn about these disorders. As prevalence grows, there's an increasing need for credible facts and information for many families, educators and professionals. In this course, you learned about the core features of Autism Spectrum Disorders, and how they're typically diagnosed. You watched a parent interview about the ASD diagnosis, and videos about ASD risks. We also explored early signs and indicators, as well as developmental challenges that span a lifetime. We watched videos about early intervention, as well as videos from the perspectives of an adult with autism, and a job developer about job readiness. We discussed the patterns of strength and weakness that are common among those on the Autism Spectrum, which helped you understand how and why certain intervention approaches have been developed, and which may work well for certain learners. We examined some of the sensory and emotional regulation challenges and discussed how these aspects of the disability impact those who are affected. And in our final module, I provided you with an overview of the current treatment and interventions that are supported by research. Again, this course was intended to give you an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorders. If you're a professional who works with children or young adults on the Autism Spectrum, we encourage you to consider continuing your studies in our academic program offered by UC Davis Extension. The Professional Concentration Award in Autism Spectrum Disorders is open to all licensed or certificated professionals who wish to expand and deepen their skills in using evidence-based practices to serve the children on the Autism Spectrum. We've trained more than 1,000 professionals from around the country, including special educators, general educators, speech pathologists, psychologists, occupational therapists, behavior therapists, and others. Learn how to support children's social, behavioral and communication needs under the guidance of experts who provide a high touch, hands-on experience. For more information, please visit the link at the end of this module. Thank you.
