If you want to learn some English

through comprehensible input and you

want to learn a little bit more about

British culture, then this is the video

for you. Hello everybody, my name is Sam

and welcome back to English Sponge.

Today we are going to be talking about

five different ways to piss off a Brit.

Yes, you heard it correctly. We are

going to be talking about five different

ways to make a British person angry. But

before we get into the video, if you

guys enjoy this type of content, make

sure to check out both the English

Sponge website and English Sponge here

on YouTube for more exclusive content.

Trust me, there's lots of amazing videos

up on both of those platforms that you

don't want to miss. So, let's get

started with the list.

So, the first thing that you can do to

piss people off here in Britain is to

stand on the left hand side of an

escalator.

It is an unspoken rule here in Britain

that when traveling on an escalator, you

must stand on the right hand side. This

is so people who are in a rush can use

the left hand side of the escalator to

walk up or to walk down them without

being blocked by others. Something I see

so much here in London are tourists who

have not worked out this rule yet.

Tourists who stand with their family

across the escalator. The people who get

blocked behind them can get really

annoyed. The people who are blocked from

walking down or up the escalator can get

really angry about this, [screaming]

especially in London, especially during

rush hour.

Here in London, people move quickly and

they do not play around when it comes to

transport. So, it's best to avoid

standing on the left hand side of the

elevator to ensure you don't piss off

any brits.

Nice. So, that was the first way to piss

off a Brit. Now, let's move into number

two. So, the second thing that you can

do to piss off a British person is not

getting your round at the pub. So, when

we go drinking here in Britain,

especially when we go drinking in pubs,

we buy drinks in what we call rounds.

This is when one person from the group

buys everybody's drink. That is his

round. After everyone has finished their

drinks and are ready to start the next

one, the second person goes up and buys

everybody's drinks. We call it a round

because they're buying a round for

everybody. Each person goes up in a row

to buy their drinks for the rest of the

group. This usually continues until

everybody in the group has bought a

round. It means sometimes you end up

getting very drunk, especially if you're

in a big group with lots of people. Now,

if you don't buy a round for everybody

else at the pub, or if you don't at

least offer to buy around for everybody

in the pub, it can be seen quite badly

by others.

» Brian, it's your round.

» Brian,

where are you going?

Ryan,

» it can be seen as very rude and quite

disrespectful.

It's almost as if you're not acting like

a proper member of the group. So, it's a

big no no, of course. So, that was the

second way to piss off a Brit. Let's

move into the third way to piss off a

Brit. So everybody, the third way to

piss off a Brit is to use your phone's

speaker in public. Yeah, what's up man?

It's me, dude. You're never going to

believe it, right? So yesterday I'm down

by the river ths and I'm just kicking

around a soccer ball minding my own

business when all of a sudden this

British guy comes up to me and he's just

trying to insert the letter U into words

where the U doesn't even Now this is

especially true on public transport like

the underground or like buses. A way to

really piss off a Brit is to use your

phone speaker at full volume. Here in

the UK, it is considered quite rude and

quite disrespectful to others if you use

your phone speaker out in public. It's

almost saying that your conversation,

your music, your video, whatever it is,

it's saying that you believe it's more

important than everybody else's peace

and quiet, which is of course a big no

no. It's especially annoying to a

British person like myself if you're

having a loud phone conversation on

speaker phone. Conversation like this,

not a big deal. But when you have it out

on speaker phone for everyone to hear,

it's really annoying. Now, here's the

thing. I thought this was a social rule

everywhere. I thought everywhere had

this same unspoken rule to not play

music or not play videos out loud in

public. But living in Argentina showed

me this was not the case. In certain

countries, it is deemed socially

acceptable, socially okay to play music

out your phone and public transport, to

watch videos loudly. Um, that was

something that really surprised me cuz

over here in the UK, it's seen really

badly. It's a shorefire way to piss off

a Brit.

So if you do this in Britain, be

prepared for some dirty looks. People

probably won't say anything to you, but

they will not be very happy. So that was

the third way to piss off a Brit. Let's

get into the penultimate way to piss off

a Brit. Number four. Now the fourth way

to piss off a Brit, and this is a big

one, is to cut in line. Cutting in line

is a big social no here in Britain. You

cannot do it.

Us Brits are stereotyped for loving

cues. And I have to be honest, I think

this stereotype is true. British people

are fantastic at queuing up. And pushing

in a queue is seen very badly.

If you push in a queue in Britain, if

you cut the line in Britain, it's very

very disrespectful.

People view it as the person who cutting

the line thinks they are better than

everybody else. They think that their

time is more valuable than everybody

else's. Um, so yeah, it's definitely

something to avoid. Now, this is one if

you cut in line, this will actually make

British people speak up. Some of these

other things, people would get pissed

off, but they'd be very quiet about it.

Cut in line in front of a Brit and

they're definitely definitely going to

say something to you. This is something

to avoid in Britain for sure if you

don't want confrontation.

Um, so yeah, that was the fourth way to

piss off a Brit. Let's get into the

fifth and final way to piss off a

British person. Okay guys, so the fifth

and final way to piss off a Brit, and

for me, the biggest way to piss off a

Brit is to call football soccer.

» I love soccer.

Yep, this is a really big one. Calling

our beloved national sport soccer and

not football is a guaranteed

shorefire

100%

certainty

way to piss off a British person. In

fact, I'm getting annoyed just thinking

about it. Football is a massive part of

the culture here in Britain and our

passion for it runs deep almost like a

religion for many people. So when people

come here and they call our beloved

national treasure the wrong name, it

cuts deep. It can it can really really

piss people off. That's for sure. Now

here's the thing. It's called football

for a very, very simple reason. You have

a ball and you kick that ball with your

feet. That weird stop start sport that

the Americans call football. Doesn't

make sense, right? I have never

understood why they would call it

football.

Firstly, it is not a ball. It is an egg.

Secondly,

90% of the game they have the ball in

their hands. So, please somebody explain

to me why that for them is football.

Nope. There is only one football and

it's played here with your feet. A

really easy way to annoy a new group of

British friends that you may have is to

make this mistake. So, when you're

speaking with British people, make sure

to call it football and not soccer.

Disgusting.

[laughter]

So, guys, that was my list of five

different ways to piss off a Brit. I

really, really hope you enjoyed this

video. Uh, I hope you learned some new

vocabulary along the way. And more

importantly, I hope you learned a little
