You don't need to travel too far out of Tokyo to experience Edo era style aesthetic. Affectionally known as Little Edo, the former castle town of Kawagoe is a day trip location just 30 minutes away from Ikebukuro Station on Tobu-Tojo line, or about an hour if you're traveling from Shinjuku. You can also purchase the Kawagoe bus pass at Kawagoe Station for the low cheapo price of 300 yen which is real deal if you plan on seeing everything Kawagoe has to offer in a single day. About 15 minutes from the station is Kurazukuri Street which refers to Edo period warehouse architecture and Kawagoe's history as a merchant town. Some of the buildings from that era have managed to survive to this day. Close by is another step back in time with Taisho-roman Street. This charming road features Taisho era architecture and is a popular setting in Japanese film and dramas. For even more Japanese nostalgia, visit Kashiya Yokocho, an alley with many shops that sell low-price sweets and snacks. Many of which are reminiscent of the post-war Showa era. Some of the More popular destinations in Kawagoe are the many shrines and temples. You'll probably stumble upon a few just walking around but the most famous are Kita-in temple an Hikawa Shrine. Kita-in is famous for being refurbished by parts of the original Edo Castle as well as its statues of 540 disciples of Buddha, some of which feature very comedic expressions. Nearby Hikawa Shrine was one of the favorite shrines of Emperor Meiji and it claims to have 2400 years of history. Worship for match-making and happiness and marriage, couples can be spotted at the shrine fishing for fortunes or strolling through its tunnels of. Behind Hikawa Shrine and easy to miss if you're in a rush is the Shingashi River, a very scenic and popular spot during the Sakura season.
