Import Netflix Content into LingQ
GordonSomtimesRamsay

I think there nothing wrong if the Netflix content is transported to LingQ. Of course, it has to be in a legal way. Well, the great thing about it is that it can reach a bigger audience. Since it also has an extension icon, it will be easier for you to watch your favourite shows. The great thing about it is that you might even access those that are not available or restricted in your jurisdiction. Well, this is just based on my observation. It might not apply to all streaming sites. What are the other streaming sites available?
lizzied

when i try this it says "no appropriate captions found"
zoran

Are you sure video you are trying to import has available subtitles for your study language?
jprieto9

Is there any chance we can watch the video at the same time, and clicking in the subtitles?
Charlielovell

Hi,
I just tried importing Chefs Table France from netflix and received what I think is the description, not the sub titles.
See below what was imported.

it does not work for me (" No appropriate captions found.") . Maybe because it's Israeli Netflix? Can anyone help me?
matejforejtnik

Just wondering, LingQ sometimes rejects my imports for being too long, e.g. an hour long Youtube video. Can I import a whole episode from Netflix then? Does it split them automatically, say, into 4 parts or something?
mark

Yes, there's a limit on audio length which impacts YouTube videos since an audio file is created for Youtube videos as well. Since there is no audio file created for Netflix imports, the episode will just get split into parts and there is no length limit.
mark

@Preben, @yoshisbg, @ming1401 - Can I ask what interface language you have Netflix set to? We can't recreate these issues you are having and are trying to figure out what could be different. Also, please post any shows and episode numbers you are having trouble with.
Preben

Interface language: English.
Show: Omniscient s1e3, audio: Brazilian Portuguese (Original), sub: tried both Brazilian Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese [CC]. (e1 and e2 worked, also imported all of another brazilian series I had already watched a few days ago).
Castlevania (set to German and German subtitles) s2e3-5. (Imported s2e2 fine which was the first time I tried the extension on netflix).
I will go and see if I can import some other shows in German I have already watched.
Thank you.
Preben

Tried 3 German shows and 2 Brazilian shows, I am still getting Error: No appropriate captions found.
Preben

I have also tried turning off the Language Learning with Netflix chrome extension, but it did not help. I just find it weird that it suddenly stopped working. It did not work on firefox either, so it cannot have been the extension.
Preben

Ah, I tried importing an episode of a show I had already imported, and that worked! Now I don't know. Girls from Ipanema s1e1 worked.
Preben

Tried going to firefox to import Omniscient s1e3, and got the same error.
Hope all that information helps.
Still don't know if it is just me.
mark

@Preben and any others still having problems, we can find the issue with some languages sometimes not showing up in the list of import languages using the Safari extension. We are having trouble recreating any issues in Chrome and Firefox. Can you send some screenshots of what you see when you hover on the language settings in Netflix so we can see the audio and text languages lists you are seeing.
We aren't sure what is happening but right now have to assume it could be custom permissions or conflict with another extension. Any more information you can provide to help us recreate the issue will be very helpful.
Preben

I sent you some screenshots.
Yes, I figured it must be some extensions, but I did not install any new extensions.
And I downloaded Firefox just to try the import.
Let me know if there is anything else I can do.
Preben

I tried to import Omniscient s1e1 and s1e2 which I had already imported, and that worked. And then going straight to s1e3 and importing and then it suddenly worked. That is very weird. I've been trying for two days to import that, and I just sent you a screenshot of s1e3 not importing. I'll try the same with the other show.
Preben

Castlevania (German Audio, German sub) s2e5 would not import, went back to s2e1 that imported, then s2e2 imported, and then e3,4,5 (which I could not earlier) imported.
That is weird.
But I guess that fixed it for now :).
mark

I'm glad it's fixed but there must have been some issue since we didn't actually fix anything...! Please try and note anything that may be happening or what you are doing if it should happen again. Importing episodes a second time should actually just open the previous episode you imported. Strange it should cause the other episodes to work.
Preben

Hi mark and lingQ staff,
Are you currently having problems with importing from netflix, or is it just me?
It worked fine for a while on chrome. Then it stopped working and I keep getting the error message
Error: No appropriate captions found.
I use version 1.7.16.
I installed firefox and downloaded the extension there, got the samme error.
Cheers.
mark

@yoshisbg - It should show all options although only the Korean captions make sense to import so it definitely should show you Korean as an option. Can you try the Chrome extension to see if that works for you? We are trying to figure out why that is happening to you and that will help us narrow it down.
mark

@yoshisbg - Do you have the latest version of the Safari extension? Make sure to have Korean selected as your captions language. It won't import any other language. Just the original language captions to match the show.
yoshisbg

I downloaded the extension yesterday. it says version 1.0.11
Please look at the screenshot. I put it here again. As you can see the problem is that it doesn't let me select any other language besides English. The show has subtitles in several languages so shouldn't the extension let me choose between all of them? But it doesn't. the only option I get is English ???
yoshisbg

PS I just tried it with a different Netflix show, that worked...
mark

I'm sorry to say that it seems to work fine for me when importing that episode in Chrome. I assume you have tried closing Netflix, LingQ, your browser and reopening all and trying again?
ming1401

Yes I tried doing that with all three and the situation hasn't changed since I first tried to import that specific episode last month.
mark

@ming1401, yoshisbg - Are you using the latest version of the extension? Which browser are you in? It seems to be working fine for me. If it still doesn't work, let us know which show and which browser you are using.
ming1401

Currently using version 1.7.16 on chrome, show I tried to import: Call My Agent s1 ep 3
yoshisbg

Hello!
Safari Verson 1.0.11
The show is called "It's Ok to Not Be Okay" (Episode 1)
I can only import English subtitles, just not the subtitles for other languages
screenshot
ming1401

Hi! Love the import tool and it really is a game changer, however I've been having trouble importing certain show eps into French Lingq, tried both chrome and netflix but it I keep getting the same error (no appropriate captions found) for the same episodes.
yoshisbg

I'm using the extension with Safari. I wanted import Korean subtitles from a Korean drama. On Netflix the show has subtitles in German, Korean, English, French and Italian. I have Korean subtitles on, but the Lingq extension only lets me choose between English or French?
NotBobias

Excitement ensues
dan-w-s

Does the plugin still work? I've tried with Safari and Chrome and it always says No appropriate captions found. If I look in the Chrome developer tools, I can see the subtitle file in the Network view and was able to download it.
mark

Should be working fine. Make sure you have the latest version of the extensions installed. Is it one show in particular or all shows that aren't working for you?
dan-w-s

I'll uninstall and try again. I've tried with a handful of shows -- the drop-down box to select the language is always empty (though I've turned on French, German, Italian subtitles in various shows).
mark

The list of languages should reflect the languages you have open in your LingQ account. But, even if you are not logged in, all languages should show. That seems strange. That is happening in multiple browsers?
dan-w-s

I had version 1.0 installed. I removed it and 1.0.11 is working fine now! I should have tried that first. Thanks.
Mj31588

When I use this, I am only getting the subtitles and not the audio. Am I doing something wrong, or does this feature only give you the subtitles?
zoran

That's how Netflix importing works, you get the subtitles, but not the audio. When importing from YouTube, however, you'll get subtitles, audio and video all together.
kaye6000

Hi I am learning spanish and have tried to import a netflix show ( im using chrome) and come up with this error message Error:No appropriate captions found.
I have tried a few different spanish shows but none them work.
Please can you help with this?
Many thanks

The firefox link is not working for me
mark

We have pushed an update to all Extensions to resolve outstanding issues with importing Croatian, Serbian and Traditional Chinese captions from Netflix. This should all be working properly now. Make sure you have updated to the latest version of the extension. You may have to close and/or refresh your browser to fully update the extension.
johnmiller

e have pushed an update to all Extensions to resolve outstanding issues with importing Croatian, Serbian and Traditional Chinese captions from Netflix.
I actually imported my first traditional character set after that.
kruskyro

This is life changing! Is there a way to get this explosion of newly imported youtube/netflix content to show up on the audio playlist? Or do you have to be in the computer version lesson to hear it.
mark

Only audio from YouTube is imported by the extension. Then, it can be added to the playlist like any other lesson with audio. We only grab the captions from all other video sites.
dannydudlow

I've found that sometimes the audio from YouTube is imported and sometimes it isn't. Is there a setting that affects this?
zoran

Audio should always import together with video and subtitles. In some cases there can be small delay in audio uploading.
If you have any example video where audio never uploads, please post a link.
johnmiller

I tried many times using Chrome and Windows 10 but importing traditional Chinese characters Netflix which were available for the show in question never transferred, it always came as simplified.
mark

Are you using the Traditional Chinese slot on LingQ? And choosing this as the language to import into?
johnmiller

I'm not sure what you mean 100%, however:
Are you using the Traditional Chinese slot on LingQ?
My language for my profile in the blue header on the desktop website version says Traditional Chinese.
And choosing this as the language to import into?
In the menu for the LingQ importer chrome extension, it is set to Traditional Chinese.
mark

All of that sounds correct. Can you tell me the name of the show so we can try it ourselves?
johnmiller

Can you tell me the name of the show so we can try it ourselves?
Sure it's called Accidentally In Love
mark

Thanks. I have passed that along. I'll let you know when it should be working.
mark

I just tested that show and it seems to import fine for me. In both Safari and Chrome. I had to have Traditional Chinese added as one of my languages in LingQ. If its not working for you, do you have the latest version of the extension? Which browser are you in?
johnmiller

If its not working for you, do you have the latest version of the extension? Which browser are you in?
Chrome.
Right now I just tried it again on a chrome book. LingQ Version
1.7.14 of LingQ
I appear to have Chinese Traditional as a language because I can select it from the import extension menu. I will note, the only thing weird is that the flag does not fill in when I select that language, but it does for every other language I try. IE in LingQ importer it has an empty circle next to "Traditional Chinese"
johnmiller

I just tested that show and it seems to import fine for me. In both Safari and Chrome. I had to have Traditional Chinese added as one of my languages in LingQ.
Do you have 'normal' Chinese added as a language? I wonder if it's taking precedence somehow because whenever I try I always get those, simplified characters, showing up.
johnmiller

Well it works fine for another show in traditional characters so I guess for this show I'll do the review in simplified and just use traditional when I watch it on Netflix. I won't struggle with it unless I get this issue happening again.
arsenallan

Netflix won't work with norwegian. Is there something I can do to get it done? Whereas youtube vids with norwegian subs do import, netflix vids wont get through. I have no problem with other languages or other browser's. It is just the norwegian vids on netflix. Does it have to do with the Bokmal thing, Any solutions? thanks in advance
mark

Can you post an example of a show you are trying to import so we can check into it?
johnmiller

LingQ Importer Netflix: CAN"T get TRADITIONAL Chinese characters
Even if my netflix subtitles are set to traditional when I use the Import from the chrome extension in windows 10, I only get simplified characters (with an option to have small traditional above the simplified instead of pinyin in the settings).
Something I'm doing wrong or Traditional is only beta so doesn't work? (Or is there a greater list of my imports that I'm missing? I looked in both "course" lists that I made, no luck. Please help!
mark11

Update: The updated Chrome extension is now also live. Make sure to update to the latest version 1.7.14.
mark

We've just pushed updated versions to Firefox and Chrome. Safari should be working already. The new Firefox version is now live so make sure to update your extension to the newest version. The Chrome update is pending but will hopefully be available for update soon. The new versions should resolve the issue you were having.
Atlan

I tried for the first time to import Chinese content from Netflix and it didn't work at all. I don't know if there is any difference because I live in Japan and I'm accessing the Japanese website.
Olioli

I‘m having a problem importing an episode from Netflix. The sign ‘importing’ is circling forever. I’ve tried it with two different shows but it’s the same. What should I do? I’m using Chrome.
zoran

We are looking into the issue @Olioli. Thanks for your patience.
afb

Issue also here from Brazil, using chrome extension. Everything working fine on youtube, but not on netflix
Liha

Am I the only one here can't import subtitles? I'd like to import Italian subtitle using Safari! It simply says 'Import Failed'. Help me out please :///
voxtab

Wow....You guys are amazing!
I work at hope It can help you some day.
nicholasjones1992

when i try to import netflix subtitles, i get an error on the extension, not a valid string. any reason for this?
mark

Update: A new version was published to Firefox and Safari today which fixes various bugs with Youtube and Netflix import.
Unfortunately, the Chrome Extension continues to be hung up in Chrome's extremely painful Extension Review Process which has had us in their queue waiting for approval for almost 2 weeks now. Hopefully, once we get this approval, which seems to be a new thing, future approvals will go faster since we have made 2 additional updates since we pushed a version for approval from Chrome. Until those updates are approved, the latest fixes will not be available. Not sure why they feel they can sit on extensions for this long in this day and age!
MarkE

Thanks Mark
KnowItSome

I have downloaded the Chrome extension just now to my Windows 10 computer. The extension works with a random Youtube video.
However, I want to import episodes of Dark. This is not working. I have set the Netflix language and subtitles to German and have clicked PLAY on Netflix. I have then clicked PAUSE. Then I click on the extension, being sure to set my language to German.
I think this is what the LingQ instructional video advises.
But all I get is a spinning wheel and the message "importing". I tried Episode 3 and Episode 4. Same result. If I don't choose an episode at all, but just click on the Dark series, I do find that the import works and brings in the English description of the series.
Am I missing additional steps?
mark

We seem to be having some issues with Netflix import right now. Sorry about that. We are working to fix it as fast as we can.
KnowItSome

Thank you. As an update, I tried this whole process through Firefox just now, and it worked!
KnowItSome

As a further update, I went ahead and downloaded all ten episodes of the first season. A few times I got an odd message from the extension, about the appropriate language not being available. But then I closed Netflix, and opened the Dark Episode again, and was able to get the extension working again.
This Extension is going to be a godsend. It was taking me hours to watch half an episode because I was looking up words the old fashioned way, and making notes. So much easier with LingQing! THANK YOU!
barbaracr

It's not working.
zoran

Sorry to hear that. What happens when you try to import? Do you see any error message?
barbaracr

That's the message: There was an error opening this lesson. We have been notified and will investigate this issue. You will be redirected to the home page where you can try opening another lesson.
I've been following all the steps from youtube video "lingq import netflix". I've already changed the browser but still not working. Tried diferent episodes and diferent languages too, but none of these worked.
AbigaelSarah

How do you guys deal with the terrible Netflix subtitles that are pretty much a paraphrase of what the characters are actually saying? I'd use Netflix a lot more if I could find an accurate transcript... I guess in a sense it's useful to know two ways of expressing a similar meaning, but it's confusing if you don't know exactly what they're saying in the first place.
LILingquist

Totally understand what you are saying, especially when watching English language shows. However, I have noticed that in all the Spanish shows and movies I have watched that Spanish subtitles were pretty much 100% matching the Spanish dialoge. Some the Spanish translation of the occaisional English being spoken on screen wasn't the greatest, but the Spanish was still accurate and this was a not very frequent (say a scene where an American DEA agent is speaking English in a Mexican show).
Despite this, I don't think it would matter, even if this weren't true because when you were linqing the text before or after watching the show, that's when you'd be doing the real learning anwyay.
AbigaelSarah

Thanks! All the Netflix shows I've watched have had subtitles that vary from the actual speech at least once every other sentence, but maybe it's because I only watch PG kid/family shows with less production quality lol. But you're right, it probably won't matter because I'll be learning the subtitle phrases, which after all are equally valuable examples of Spanish bc they're still grammatical and have the same meaning.
LILingquist

Agreed. Also, based on my personal experience, the primary combined benefit of watching the Spanish show, hearing the Spanish dialogue, and reading the Spanish subtitles is being able to associate the sound of the language wtih the appearance of the text. Aside from the fact you'll be reading outside of the show (on LingQ like I mentioned before) I also think you'll be fine as long as the words are being pronounced properly and they more or less match up. In other words, close enough is good enough.
breezybree

I've been trying to import "Better Than Us" in the original Russian. There are Russian captions on Netflix but it still says 'no appropriate captions found'
I've tried a couple of others that didn't work either.
mark

Yes, we have a new version of the extension which fixes the issue waiting for approval by the Chrome app store. Hopefully, it should be available in the next few days. Sorry about that.
arttsai

Around several months age, I imports the first episode of some korean drama from Netflix. It worked.
Today I started to import the second episode of the same korean drama but I found it didn't work. It says ""Error:No appropriate captions found."
I don't know why. Is there something changed in Linq importer or in Netflix?
Please help.
Thanks.
zoran

Sorry about that. We are already familiar with that issue and our team is looking into it. Hopefully we will have it fixed soon.
Thanks for your patience!
Dowd1sm

I'm using Chrome, trying to import "Pablo Escobar: Patron Del Mal" from Netflix and I get an error that says "Error:No appropriate captions found." Any ideas why? I can clearly see the captions/subtitles as turned on...
Alexandy

Me too. I get the message "Error:No appropriate captions found" or just "Error". I tried on Chrome and Firefox.
Dowd1sm

ATTEMPT #2: Now the transcript imports, but NOT the video? Any ideas?!
qarime

I can't understand when I import from Netflix I (Premium sub) just have only 5 lessons, why? How can I get all CC for move?
zoran

@qarime What exactly you mean by 5 lessons only? Are you unable to import more? What happens if you try?
qarime

I tried import some move from Netflix and just half move imported ~ 40 minutes. Added just 5 lessons. When I import eBook all good but from Netflix not. I tried with FF plugin
StewartLikesLingQ

I'm having trouble with importing both the Brazilian series "Ninguem ta Olhando" and "3%" on updated Chrome.
kraemder

Am I supposed to get audio with the subs?
zoran

No, with Netflix importing you'll get subtitles only, not the audio. If you are importing from YouTube too, there you'll get both subtitles and audio.
Alexandy

Thanks for creating this great feature (it works perfectly fine on Youtube) but it doesn't work for me with Netflix. When I go on my LingQ, the only thing that has been downloaded is the summary in English and not the episode in my target language. I tried on Netflix and PrimeVideo as well. I'm on a PC and my browser is Firefox. I hope someone can help me make it work. Thank you so much. Alex
Alexandy

Any ideas?
sergeman

Haven't tried it with Firefox, but when I have had it work, I open the episode I'm interested in, then change the subtitles to the language I want, and then finally use the LingQ extension to import.
Alexandy

I'll try on Chrome.
dannydudlow

This is a brilliant tool. I notice with longer videos on Netflix, it separates the script into shorter lessons, which is extremely useful too. Although, with longer videos on Youtube, I've had the message " duration: Ensure this value is less than or equal to 5400 ". Is there a way around that (I was using Chrome), or is that a work in progress?
It was this video in particular that I wanted to use a lesson: https://youtu.be/xSrjzk0WJ6A
zoran

You can't import from YouTube if video is longer than 90 minutes, that's the limit at the moment.
sergeman

Is it still possible to have Text-to-Speech on subtitles that you import? Because so far it seems that's not the case.
zoran

Yes, TTS should work in all imported lessons too. Which browser are you using?
sergeman

That's using both Chrome and the mobile app. In the browser, when I press the speakerphone icon, it looks like it's playing but no audio is produced. I'm not sure if it has to do with how the lesson is being time stamped perchance.
zoran

Can you send me a link to one of lessons you imported so that I can test it on my end?
sergeman

zoran

TTS works fine for me on that lesson. Is it still not working for you?
sergeman

TTS works for individual words, but it does not read sentences in sentence mode.
AKDiscer

This has been instrumental in helping understand more of Dark on Netflix, so awesome!
mholevar

OMG This is such a helpful feature. Thank you!!!
mark

Update: The Safari Extension is now able to import from Netflix as well. Get the new version here:
Note: Safari has changed the way they handle extensions and the extension now has to be downloaded as an app and then installed.
marcos.rm

That's simply amazing!!
In the last decade, I tried all kinds of different courses and apps, but LingQ has always been the best of them by far. I can't believe now I'm going to be able to integrate it with my other main source of language materials.
Thanks you so much, I'll recommend this platform until my last breath.
LILingquist

To Mark and all the LingQ Staff, especially the genius that developed this capability,
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
I tested it out last night after reading this thread, watching the instructional vid, and then watching the recent YouTube video by the Master himself. This feature is truly amazing for two reasons:
1) the obvious use as a learning tool.
2) I have watched 11 telenovelas and other shows, as well as at least 21 Spanish movies and documentaries on NetFlix. Before when I didn't know a word, I was writing in down and importing in into LingQ. Not only would I have saved that effort, but now I can import all those "words" into LingQ and count them exactly toward my overall words read for stats keeping purposes. I'm at 1.8 million now, but I know it's actually much higher becuase of all the Spanish subtitles I have read over the years.
There are a few movies that are no longer on NetFlix, along with one show that I can remember. Perhaps I will post a separate thread in the future asking to see if anyone out there in LingQ Land has them.
Amazing! Thank you yet again!
Paul_Russell

I just got done importing the first episode of "Dark" and it worked wonderfully. (Win10/Chrome) Thank you!
jwp51

Installed the Chrome extension and have been trying to import an episode of Money Heist from Netflix. The circle in the “Importing” box has been going around for an hour now. How long does this normally take?
zoran

Shouldn't be that long. Do you have problem with that one episode only? Have you tried importing anything eles?
jwp51

It's working now. I imported an episode and it only took a few seconds.
afb

That's happening with me, how did you get around it?
Nona

Thank you!
sgjeffery

I can't make this work on my MacBook Air. I've managed to get the extension but it only imports the description of the series, not the subtitles. Is this likely to change anytime soon?
mark

You will have to use Firefox or Chrome on your Macbook. The Safari extension doesn't yet import from Netflix.
Cristianojo

tem previsão para o amazon prime video também?
mark

We have no plans to add Amazon Prime but, if there is enough demand, we can look into it. Do they offer movies in many different languages?
Cristianojo

ok thank you
t_harangi

Amazon prime is oddly behind in the mutli-language audio and subtitle game. I keep hoping they will at least add Spanish dubbed versions in the US, but no.
They do have some foreign titles with english subtitles, but that's about it.
Combiendemarins

Here Netflix comes only with the vo and some version in my national languages. That makes 4 languages at best. For other languages you are limited to vo in these languages.
Amazon prime offers a lot more and you can make your search in their catalogue before registring with them. Be aware the polish dub are quite poor with one voice dubing the whole show over the vo..
Just as an example Doctor House and Forrest Gump both have ton of dub and more sub. Mr Robot have a magyar and a cestina version both dub and sub.
TimB

Good to know that access to Netflix shows in a variety of languages is limited in some countries. Thanks.
t_harangi

Yes, Netflix's library will be different in different countries due to various rights they buy etc. For example, Netflix will have a show like The Alienist that's shown as a "Netflix Original" series in Europe, even though in the US it's actually an AMC (or something like that) show and not available on Netflix at all.
The language audio tracks will change as well, depending on what territories Netflix has licenses for.
But overall, it feels like they do try to make as much content available in as many languages as possible for each territory. Amazon, doesn't do that, unfortunately.
rajneilg

Please add Amazon Prime! Their range of subtitles is way more than Netflix,
vmunhoz

Yes, there are many different languages on prime video. I would love to import the subtitles from there, but I'm not able to that now...
Cristianojo

Obrigado, facilitou bastante
MatthewDonovan

This is absolutely fantastic! I Just tried it with a Hebrew show on Netflix (Shtisel) and it worked without issues!
Thank you!!!
ginthewoods

Safari does import...something. I tried a French series and clicked on French (cc) transcript. But what loaded into Lingq was the transcript in ENGLISH. Is this a Safari problem, or something else? Great idea, though. Hope I can make it work.
(later)...Following up on my previous comment (can't find it below): yep; if you do it in Chrome it works fine. In Safari it just brought in the English transcript. And it was not possible to add a new course before the import, either.
TimB

Unfortunately, Safari does not yet have the capability to import from Netflix although it will import from Youtube and any number of other websites and video sites.
Vilasboas89

Same here using Firefox.
TimB

The Firefox bug has been reported to our technical team.
MarkE

It's working perfectly for me thank you very much.
Vilasboas89

Hello Mark,
I'm learning English then I tried to import a TV Series which has English[CC] subtitles and unfortunately it does not work. Could you give any clue to make it work?
mark

You would have to provide the tv series name so we could look into it. And, also, which browser you are using.
Vilasboas89

I'm using firefox and watching Better Caul Saul. When I try to import that message shows up external_image: Enter a valid URL.
TimB

Thank you for letting us know. We'll take a look at this.
It does work on Chrome at the moment if you want to try that while we sort this out.
TimB

If you update Firefox to the latest version, it should work. Here's a link explaining how to do so. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/update-firefox-latest-release
milenalazarevic

Does it work on android? I tried importing dw deutschlandlabor from yt and it did not grab subtitles neither audio.
mark

I'm afraid this only works on the web in Chrome and Firefox right now.
milenalazarevic

Is it possible to somehow make import work for dw website for texts like top thema?
mark

Can you send us the url of a page you want to import from there?
milenalazarevic

https://www.dw.com/de/fdh-und-fkk-deutsche-lieben-abk%C3%BCrzungen/l-50009294
Problem is i think that text is in manuscript tab and import extension only imports the part above
mark

Yes, we would have to customize the extension to target the text on the manuskript tab for that website. There is a lot of good content there so we'll look into it. Thanks for letting us know.

Milena, I don't know about doing your specific dw.com import, but dw.com has a channel on youtube and the import works great on the short videos from that in my experience.
I do find it may be best to edi the lesson afterwords though, if you like single sentence mode....You may want to edit out the breaks where it moves one part of a sentence onto the next page--(show sentence splits, then delete the markers in the middle of some sentences).
Lots of great content.

Yes I know I figured that out, I successfully imported some over phone, does import from youtube has length limit or is it because of android import function i am only able to import short videos but cant import whole nicos weg movie (maybe would work on a laptop but i dont have one now cause I'm on holiday) thanks
mark

Length of the video shouldn't matter. If you are having problem with a specific video, send us the url so we can take a look into it. It would be good if you could also try it on the computer to make sure it is an Android problem versus an overall importing problem.

https://youtu.be/4-eDoThe6qo here if someone can test it on a pc
ericb100

For some reason it's not allowing me to reply to your last post Milena so sorry if this is in the incorrect order.. I know I can import the individual lessons for Nicos Weg. I did try the full movie import and got the failure on PC.
The error says "Error: duration: Ensure this value is less than or equal to 5400." so there does appear to be some sort of limitation for importing from youtube, or at least on this particular video.
milenalazarevic

Thanks for trying, i cant be bothered to import every video separately, when you import short videos does it import audio? I imported some deutschlandlabor videos yesterday and for some it imorted audio but for some no (also on my phone) no idea why
ericb100

Milena, yes, it does import the video/audio and transcript for that specific scene in Nicos Weg if you do the individual video scenes. I'm using desktop only...Although I don't think I tried on the phone for Nicos Weg, on other youtube content I've not had good luck. Desktop browser is much more reliable so far for me.
Tedious to do every scene, but it is relatively quick per scene on the desktop. The bad thing about importing each scened aside from the tediousness is that every video has the Nicos Weg theme song which is kind of annoying to hear anytime you play it.

I've reported the "duration error" to our technical team and will get back to you when I have an answer.

I just tried it as well on Safari, and it didn't work for me either.
iancurry

I just tried it with the Arabic show "Jinn" and it looks like the subtitles were pulled into LingQ, but no audio was pulled in. Is this happening to anyone else?
amop567

The tool imports the subtitles, not the audio
jbfan88

found a small bug for you. I saw a taiwanese movie that looked interesting, so I switched lingQ to traditional chinese to import it. but when I went to import it said "Error:No appropriate captions found. Available languages are: English, Traditional Chinese"
Is that because LingQ writes it was "Chinese(traditional)"?
mark

Thanks for letting us know. We'll take a look and see what's happening there.
jbfan88

please let me know.
jbfan88

This is great. I assume that your version of Netflix needs to have subtitles in the language of the film for it to work? Because for American netflix, many things only have English subtitles. For example, "I am not Madame Bovary" only has English subtitles.
mark

Yes, we can only pull in captions if they exist on Netflix.
amop567

This is an incredible feature
Uwek

This is awesome! Didn't know you guys have an extension icon. Does this work also for youtube videos with subtitles? I use more youtube than netflix however.
ericfromlingq

Yes, the extension works with a lot of websites. Depending on the site, it can pull both the audio and script.
Anything under the "added to extension column" that has a "y" should work.
rboddie

This is awesome!!
Any chance you guys are planning to add Coursera or another MOOC platform to this list? It seems perfect for the purpose; interesting content with translations in many languages and very accurate close-captioning in the lecturer's language. I'm uploading content from Coursera in Chinese now but would love if I could do it automatically with the Chrome add-inn.
Keep up the good work.

I'm not really sure how that would work. My understanding is that Coursera or other sites like it provide a course in whatever format the instructor chooses. I would think that right now you should be able to import any text lessons already using the extension. Then, if video lessons are provided and have captions, it would depend on what platform they are being played. I don't think it will be possible to just import a course for this reason. If you are able to find a standard format that is used we could look into it.
rboddie

From the few courses I've tried out on Coursera, they adhere to a strict format. All the videos I've seen have closed captioning and an interactive transcript underneath, sometimes in several different languages. As an added bonus, the transcripts have time stamps. It seems to be their own custom platform, not a link to another site like youtube.
The reading materials are usually in PDF but sometimes embedded in the platform. I've tried to use the chrome addin to import but I get some weird results. I've been pulling the transcripts and ripping audio from the videos manually to upload into LingQ, but it shouldn't be much different from Youtube or any other platform.
I'm not sure what it would take to adapt the LingQ addin to recognize this platform. If it's doable, it would be a lot of bang for your buck. There are a lot of lectures in French, Chinese, English and other languages (I assume), all using the same platform. It's really a treasure trove of advanced combined reading and listening content.
Let me know if I can help you at all.
mark

Ok, thanks. We will see what we can do there in terms of grabbing the video transcripts and time stamps. The audio is often trickier. We will also see about importing the on page transcripts. Pdf's would have to be downloaded and uploaded in our file importer.
joefizh

For edX courses, I have been using the Google Dictionary extension (which allows you to look up words on any webpage) and then importing the history as vocab from the CSV file - not ideal but allows you to have a similar experience and still be able to import words into LingQ
Ryanaissance

This is extremely useful, and the timing impeccable. I think you read my mind as I was just starting to explore how I could utilize Netflix on here.
