What are the best ways to learn language isolates?

A few days ago, I was reading this article about the origins of language isolates.

Normally when I’m learning a language I like to language cluster (for example when I learned Spanish, I learned Portuguese, Catalan and Leonese alongside it).

I was wondering if there are any techniques that you personally have used to help you learn language isolates?

Not an expert - the closest thing to an isolate that I have ever tried was Japanese and that was long ago and not very seriously - but if you manage to learn your first language of a particular cluster, surely whatever you’re doing will work just as well for a language that has no cluster?
