I have been very surprised to find that I am learning vocabulary the way Mr. Kaufman suggested, by reading and listening. I gave up on flashcards when there were too many to review. I tried a lot of different methods and decided that reading and listening were the most effective. I don’t even try to memorize as it doesn’t accomplish anything. I can only memorize a few dozen words a day at most. But, by just reading and listening, I find that I unconsciously know more and more words every week. Somehow I’m at a 13,000 word vocabulary without trying. I’m sure there are a lot of those words that I don’t really know, but I find reading easier and easier. I’ve looked at over 370,000 words and some of them are starting to stick. I have a very poor memory, but I don’t find that to be an impediment. If I just keep pushing, the words keep coming. Very strange and fun.

If its a difficult language for me, like german, i like to use flashcards in the beginning, and also use lingq at the same time. After some months I’ll probably have more than 1.5k flashcards, and that is the moment where I’ll only use lingq.

Hello miss Dorothy dlee please share and comment your experience and opinions about learning words I am not interested with this kind of comments. …

I know Steve does not like them but really the flash card websites are incredibly amazing ways to learn vocabulary and get exposure. The two most popular I would say are memrise and anki.

There’s a quote that Steve mentioned that gave me a big perspective to learning new words and the language.
“You don’t learn a language, you get USED to it”

Sounds good sir. … Could you please give me more information about that quote ?
I am interested

Language learning is largely a subconscious process, meaning there is very little deliberate learning of anything (very little vocab memorization). Instead, you “get used to” a language by massive amounts of comprehensible input. Your vocab and familiarity with the language will grow without you trying to learn anything. That is what Steve means by that quote

What I got from it is, do not try to FORCE yourself to LEARN the words because you will forget most of them anyway. So, next time you see the word, you want to get USED to seeing the word and the meaning. If not, look at the word and definition but do not try to FORCE yourself to remember. If you feel frustrated with the words, just tell your self “I’ll see the words again anyways, so I do not need to worry.” We’re more effective in learning when we are calm and not frustrated.

Yes sir I am accordant with your attitude tward no compulsion your self and insist on it that you must do it. . but we must consider that is
Essential That don’t stop learning this way we can learn more effective and this method you told us is really informative. Its an Amazing guideline

Agree completely, learning vocabulary by reading simply works, period. I also stopped with cards and trying to memorize any kind of list. The reality is that if a given word is frequent enough it will stick, and the more you read the more you learn. Actually, the words that are frequent are the ones that matter the most, which in my opinion indirectly points to the main problem with lists: they get you to memorize things in an order that is just not aligned with your daily use of the language. The other issue with lists is that even if a word comes with an example on how to use it, the example is usually meaningless and therefore hard to remember. Long story short, Jay is a genius, and the more I study the more I tend to agree with him.

By the way, one of my favorite quotes from Jay is something along the lines of “you don’t learn a language, you get used to it.” The depth of this statement just simply blows my mind.

With all this being said, liking to read is a pre-requisite for the method to work. If you don’t like to read in your native language, then learning a language by reading won’t work either.
