Buying a Tablet /E-Reader just for LingQ

Hi Zoran & Commmunity,

Total newbie here.

Planning to buy a tablet or e-reader solely for use with LingQ and lifetime access French and in the future Spanish. Plan would be to download books like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings etc. as well as video content from InnerFrench, Disney +, news etc. and go through them with LingQ.

Any suggestions on types of tablets/e-readers to look at and which ones to avoid?

Thanks so so much to everyone

I use an iPad for reading books. And I am happy with it.

I use my iPad for lingq, and it works great!

I think the iPad mini is kinda perfect for reading. Small enough to use while laying in the bed.

I purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite last year. It comes with an S pen. I absolutely love it and use it throughout the day.

Maybe try out the software on the browser version and on your phone for a month before you invest too much into it.

Thanks for the replies everyone - IPad seems like the winner but my wife loves her kindle as well. I’m not seeing much information online between kindle and ipad as far as compatibility with LingQ. Has anyone found success with headphones for audio while reading on LingQ? Again, thanks to everyone for your replies.

How do you deal with inflated reading stats on LingQ when reading on a tablet because of the new algorithm of counting words? It was not a major issue on LingQ 4.0. It did not matter how long did you spend time on each page, and how many times you read a particular lesson, overall count of reading would be counted/added once which is no longer the case on LingQ 5.0(current version).

at least on a browser version with a clean interface, I can fix it manually.

Ipad would be enough, but I think web browser works best for me! You can have dictionary software stick on left-side of screen, and open several different lessons to study. If to protect your eyesight, it’s better to buy a colored-e-ink pad than ipad, as I find it hurts eyes staring at the screen studying French for more than 8 hours a day. But I don’t have that, so I use ipad-mini sometimes.

avoid ereaders - including kindle - as they are way too slow, especially if you need to look up a lot of words in the dictionary rather than simply lingq existing entries.

I get the impression that IOS is better supported than android, so I’d probably say Ipad (which is what I use myself), but not sure if it’s worth the price difference with lower end androids if you’re going to use it just for Lingq.

There is a series of ebook readers from Onyx Boox that can run any Android app (though the apps often won’t work well due to the eInk screen). I wrote a way too long review of my experience with one here

The LingQ app works well on this device and I love using it. I use it just for LingQ and I am very happy with it. Some stuff is a bit hit or miss though. The main thing that doesn’t work well is saving phrases. I think most people would not like using LingQ on such a device and would be better off with an iPad.

Hi, I recently bought myself a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite. Very cool tablet, great for studying. So I can recommend it.

Hi, what’s your price frame?

$100-$300

Thanks for the replies everyone - sounds like IPad is the winner. Appreciate everyone’s input

I use an ipad mini, but I probably do most of my lingq activities on my phone still as it is way more convenient and portable.

I don’t find the stats any more inflated on tablet vs phone or pc. The algorithm is the same…if you’re on a page for a certain length of time it’ll count those words, otherwise it won’t. It also seems they have it dialed in pretty good nowadays and I don’t find it off by much anymore for me personally.

You can tweak the “times read” count for any lesson or words read at the main stat level on the app, just like you can on the web if it is incorrect

I use a separate tablet to connect to a very old tablet / desktop .ipad. and on the first table I set up macros where I can click once and it will do several steps (next sentence, translate etc.). I have a separate post about #macros.

iPad all the way in that they just seem to be better tablets overall for LingQ, at least traditionally, that is where the better app has been.

I had an original iPad that I barely used…until I found LingQ and started actually using LingQ. The iPad was the game changer. With my computer fairly shot and too old for most tasks, I used my iPad all the time now for email, TV, reading, some web surfing etc.

Personally I would not have gotten to where I have been without my iPad.

Another vote for the iPad for me. Only tablet I’ve ever had and I wouldn’t get a different one. Great idea though - I like the idea of having a tablet just dedicated to language skills. No doubt I have enough stuff on my computer as it is.

on iPad do you use shortcuts for marking words? I need shortcuts for marking words as 1 and 4. I do not know if there is a way to do it. Since I notice I do not have to mark too many unknown words during reading so I think I should start using the iPad exclusively.
