If we luck into

I need a job. If we luck into treatment, chances are it’s gonna cost a fortune, and work insurance won’t pay for it.

Question: Do you use luck as a verb often? Is “luck into” a phrase?

Thank you!!!

Yes, “luck into it” is a fairly common expression.

It is often used in association with finding a job that is very unique or that one is very happy with.

James Marsters, who played the vampire Spike on the tv series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is quoted as saying, “Buffy was just one of 100 auditions. I just simply lucked into it.” It means that he felt that it was luck or ‘chance’ that allowed him to get the job. Kind of like playing roulette. If you keep playing and losing, you are bound to choose the right color and number combination sometime and win. After being rejected many, many times at auditions, he was finally chosen for Buffy.

Actually, that’s not quite true. He had been acting professionally for about ten years and had played a few small parts on television before landing the role of Spike. Spike was supposed to be a small role as well — a vampire who was killed off early on in the series. But he quickly became a very popular character on the show and the writers and producers kept him alive throughout the entire 6-year run of the series. Was it just luck? I don’t think so. But Marsters probably felt like he had lucked into that role.

Another person on Twitter has, I think, a more realistic view:

There are members of society who feel that success comes from being born under a lucky star; as if you luck into it. Never mind the hard work, sacrifices, and setbacks you had to endure in order to get to where you are. You should be proud of yourself, as I’m sure you are.

I was looking at this again and realized I hadn’t explained the original sentence. Another way of saying it is:
If we are lucky and find a doctor who is willing to treat the medical condition, there is a good chance that the treatment is going to cost an enormous amount of money and that the insurance that I have through work won’t pay for the medical treatment.
