I woke up with a terrible pain in my side.

Question: I don’t understand what “in my side” means.

“In my side” means inside my tummy (abdomen) or maybe higher in rib cage, either on the left or right side.

When somebody says they have a pain in their side, they’re usually talking about a pain on the left or right side of their abdominal cavity, although it could also be higher, in their chest cavity. It could be muscular or gastrointestinal or something worse: kidney stone, appendicitis, liver damage, a mass (neoplasm), etc., or pregnancy.

ha ha, Wulfgar, yeah, I got drunk and woke up with the most terrible pain in my side. It was a knife. I don’t know how it got lodged there.

Yikes! Don’t twist it when you pull it out. At least it wasn’t a quiver. Been reading a lot of fantasy lately…
