Isn't 당신 very rude? Beginning lessons confusion

Hi, since 당신 is considered rude, why is it taught in the beginning lessons, and how would you say those things without using it? Would you just leave it out and rely on context? [Is this coat?] instead of [Is this your coat?] Or is it OK to use this word in the possessive adjective form [your] just not in the noun form [you]?

I used to live in Korea, and in my experience, 당신 is never really used. The people I worked with would always use my name and my friends would use either my name or 너/네

Here is a great lesson on it:
