Why is this character’s hiragana spelled “shin” but is pronounced differently?

Hi, not quite sure if that answers it, as I’m confused myself about a part of this, but if your questions aims at the reading as such, it’s because the on’yomi is シン but Kun’yomi is あたら.しい where the しい would be attached to the kanji to turn it into an adjective And thus is usually read as kun’yomi.
