Learning hiragana (one of the syllabaries) might be a good idea :)
The book "Remember the Kana: Hiragana" (http://www.amazon.com/Remembering-Kana-The-Hiragana-Katakana/dp/4889960724) and http://thejapanesepage.com/hiragana are pretty good ressources.
As soon as you have "mastered" hiragana, learning katakana (the other syllabary) will be much easier. You´ll also be able to pronounce Kanji (chinese characters) that have Hiragana on them (this is called "furigana, by the way)
