What does Schlagen mean, here? It usually means ‘Beats’ like in Herzschlagen. Why is it used here in the context of ‘see’?

It’s a separable verb, the infinitive is nachschlagen.
Etwas nachschlagen means to look something up in a dictionary, encyclopaedia or something.

There are a lot of verb prefixes in German. They change the meanings of the verbs. They are like ‘phrasal verbs’ in English.
Some of them are unseparate, for example ‘verstehen’, ‘zerschlagen’, however, there are a lot of separate prefixes like ‘ab, aus, nach, auf, an, mit’ etc, vor example: Ich schlage das Wort in meinem Wörterrbuch nach. Was schlägst du vor?
