Ordinal numbers for dates vs occurences

Hi, quick question about ordinal numbers. How do you distinguish between the use of the ordinal number as a date, vs as a numbered occurence. For instance, “It didn’t rain on January 1st.” vs “This is the first January it didn’t rain.”

Hi, your sentences would be
Am 1. Januar regnete es nicht. [spoken: Am ersten Januar…]
Dies ist der erste Januar, in dem es nicht regnete. [Actually we’d use another tense here but I left it like that for you to compare both sentences.]
