If Wir is "we" and uns is "us", why do they go together? "We us not" doesn't make sense, right?

If Wir is “we” and uns is “us”, why do they go together? “We us not” doesn’t make sense, right?

The meaning of the sentence is, that they can’t buy all the books for them(selves).

You will find similar combinations like:
ich mir
du dir
er / sie / es sich

wir uns
ihr euch
sie sich

Usually it means that the person or group is doing (or trying to do) something for himself or themselves.

Elythia has already explained you the sentence: ich kaufe mir, du kaufst dir, er kauft sich, wir kaufen uns etc.
I can only add that it is not a normal sentence in this text but it’s a subordinate clause after ‘weil’(because) and we have a special word order in German for such sentences, with the verb at the end- ‘nicht kaufen können’.
That’s why ‘wir uns’ are in this case together.
Good luck in German! - Viel Erfolg!
