How can I type umlauts, etc on an english ipad keyboard?

Hello,
even after four month maybe my answer is still worth it:

In general, when you are not able to type “ä”, “ö”, “ü” or “ß”, you can write “ae”, “oe”, “ue” or “ss” instead.
When I read a text where the writer uses just the alternatives it is clear to me, that they had no German keyboard.

But on your tablet try this:
Hold the letter “a” a bit longer and the keyboard will show you a few international letters similar to “a”. Just slide your finger to the letter “ä” and that’s it. Same for the keys “o”, “u” and “s”.
When you want an extra key for these letters, you just have to install a German keyboard. On a smartphone or tablet there is usually the option to add another keybord language - currently I have five different keyboards on my ipad (English, German, Catalan, Russian,…).
→ Just hold the grey key in the left corner - with the globe on it - and you can add a language.

When you use Window or Word, you can add German. You’ll have all these German letters, but not on your keyboard. You have just to remember the place of these German letters: ä -by clicking ', ö by clicking ; , ü - by clicking [, ß - by clicking -.

Others are pointing out for windows, but you’re asking about on ipad? Hold down the letter, you’ll see all the options of diactrical marks for the given letter, simply slide your finger to the one you want.

At least this works for my ipad mini.

For windows, I’ve not had huge luck with the typical suggestions. Something always seems to flip back where it doesn’t work for me. Probably user error. Often, I’ll just use this website to type things out: https://german.typeit.org/

It gives you the options you need for German. They have other languages too.
