Vanish into the ether?

Hi. I’d like to ask the expression " vanish into the ether".
This expression is used in the following sentence.
“but participants don’t seem to mind if a book they release vanishes into the ether”
I couldn’t look it up in my dictionary. In this article, I guess this expression has the same meaning as “vanish into air”. Why does the author use “ether”?

This is an interchangeable expression with “vanish into thin air.” It means to disappear without leaving any trace.

Thank you Julie!
