Why is the word “thuis” used in the first sentence (Karin verveelt zich op haar werk en thuis) but then “huis” is used in the later sentence (Karin loopt naar huis en ziet een dierenwinkel)?
thuis already has a preposition built in: te+huis = thuis, which is why you can never say “naar thuis” because that would be like putting two prepositions together: naar te huis. You can only ever say “naar huis”. So you can say, “ik verveel me thuis”, but not ik verveel me op thuis. Likewise, you can’t say, ik ga naar thuis, but rather, “ik ga naar huis.”
