Hi. I am a beginner wanting to learn chinese. Should I be trying to recognise all of the different symbols with each word?

I’m trying to learn it to and I’m in the same boat.

I studied Chinese years ago and reached a usable conversational level but without the Chinese Characters, which I tried to learn from flashcards later and achieved a vocabulary of about 50 Chinese Characters that I could recognise and write. In retrospect, I think I should have been learning the characters alongside the phonetics, even though progress is slowed that way. Now, as I’m re-learning, I am trying to learn the symbols as I go. With the Lingq system where you can read along with the speech, this is so much easier to learn than it was in the dark days. But interested too to know the answer to this from a teacher’s point of view.
