Unwanted changes to vocabulary definitions

It’s become more of an annoyance that I must revise definitions that I know have been altered somehow when doing review sessions. Is there not some way of locking in my personal definitions so that they don’t get changed by another Lingqer or by whatever mechanism is devaluing the utility of this service?

That shouldn’t be possible, nobody can’t change your saved definitions. Are you sure that happened?

So can you suggest how I can go about proving to you that definitions are appearing in my reviews that are formatted in ways that I would not have done? Because you really have made it clear that you doubt my complaint can be happening

It also shouldn’t be possible that my streak gets reset to zero after I achieve double the number of coins in a day, too. Am I sure that this happened though?

Is the content itself actually modified? The formatting does not look the same when you review, but the formatting is not lost. It just looks different on the flashcards.

The content and the format have gotten altered.

I want to refer to an earlier thread in the beta where I myself and someone else thought that own definitions were changing. I still believe either this is still an issue or something happened somewhere in the switch from 4.0 to 5.0.

For myself, I generally never save JP words without their hiragana reading, even if I’m sure of the reading. Only on very very rare occasions I don’t do it. But I have seen so many of these definitions now without the hiragana reading in my definition and with a lot of other definitions to choose from that do include the reading, that I am 100% convinced that something is/was not right.

I can’t say for 100% certain that it happened afterwards, but some of my Swedish vocabulary has definitions in Korean now and I definitely didn’t put those, because I only know a few words in Korean. I also noted that on some words weird phonetic spellings have shown up that are not at all anything I put there. Its really strange when instead of a word meaning you just get random phonetic spelling on review.
So I’d be inclined to believe that there is something going on with people overwriting each other’s definitions or definitions accidentally becoming public.

Thanks everyone for your reports. I asked our team to look into this. We will figure out what’s going on.

Argh! This is still annoying as all. With every review session, I must reedit my definitions. Can you, at least, suggest something that I can do to lock in my own definitions. This bug does seem to be undermining one of the advantages of Lingq

The problem reported here should actually be fixed. But if you still see issues then something went off again. I asked our testers and developers to look into it again. We will have it figured out and fixed asap. Thanks for letting me know.

If you happen to come across some of the “weird phonetic spellings,” could you share a screenshot / image?

Here is one example of a definition that I did not write. This doesn’t indicate whether the verb is definite or indefinite and it doesn’t include the preverb in the definition. I can show more examples but I trust that this one is enough to convince smb that this is an ongoing problem

OK… So, just to make sure I’m understanding what you are saying, the text in black color (which listed under “Saved Meaning” and says, “I can/may ask”) is NOT the text you originally entered or selected? Do I understand you correctly? You originally entered something different and when you returned, the black text with the little golden LingQ logo had changed from what you originally entered. Do I understand you correctly?

If you are referring to the text in blue (which is listed under “Popular Meanings” and reads, “can I ask”), then that is not something that will go away. That represents other definitions provided by other users. It is just a “grab-bag” of alternative definitions which you could choose to select from and could add to your own definition (if you wanted to). So, you are not complaining about the blue-colored text - Is that correct?

it’s correct what he says. It’s the saved definition that changes.
It’s difficult to notice when I’m studying French because I just select any definition, but when I’m reading Japanese it’s very obvious that the definitions are not mine (because I’m much more selective in how I define a word).

Hmm… I will say that I have not encountered this problem. I’m studying Swedish, but I wouldn’t think that the functionality was language-dependent.

I thought I had a potential solution for you, but now I realize that I’m as bedeviled as you all are. Sorry I couldn’t help.

I am specifically and exclusively referring to the definition in black text that is used in the spaced repetition reviews

Thanks for that. Our developers are investigating the issue.

@Potomacker Can you please let me know if you are still experiencing this same problem now? Thanks!

yes, it seems to be more common, the older the entry
