Lingq for Japanese is not great currently

I really liked the idea of Lingq when I signed up, but unfortunately I have found it not super usable for Japanese. Right from the start I was seeing wrong furigana in the texts, and the parsing seems to frequently split one word into two. I also would end up marking the “same” word as known multiple times because it treats all conjugations as “different” words. Are there any plans to improve these issues in the future? It would have been nice if it were possible to manually edit word splits in a story, but as far as I could tell that isn’t possible. I’d love to come back in the future if some of these issues are fixed.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Yeah, the splitting has always been an issue and I’m not sure when or if it can be improved. Furigana is also tough to automate with so many irregular readings. Maybe you can’t edit splitting in a story, but it is possible to edit most lessons.

As far as each conjugation being a different word goes, that is consistent with all other languages at lingq, I believe. It’s just how words are counted on this site.

Hi,

You can turn the furigana off by clicking the reader settings. I prefer turning off furigana, romaji, and unchecking " Show spaces between words ".

Parsing has been an issue and we’ll be looking into improving this as we roll out LingQ 5.0.

I also would end up marking the “same” word as known multiple times because it treats all conjugations as “different” words

From what I’ve seen, some users prefer to have the ‘same’ word counted as different words, while others don’t. Once the parsing is improved, this should help with counting the same words as two entirely.

It would have been nice if it were possible to manually edit word splits in a story, but as far as I could tell that isn’t possible.

As mentioned above, we will be improving the parsing. Also, what you suggested will be implemented in LingQ 5.0, that is, manually editing word splits. You can actually do this now by editing the lesson. However, in LingQ 5.0 this process will be much easier and flow faster.

Lastly, I’ve written a post about How to Learn Japanese with LingQ. I recommend you checking it out. It’ll help you get to know the features of LingQ and more importantly, recommend content you can import into LingQ. Personally, I’ve been importing anime and Japanese novels to increase my comprehension. Good luck.

We’ll do our best to improve it drastically in the upcoming update we are working on.
