It Must be an Idiom!<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a German learner, you&#8217;ve probably come across some word combinations that don\u2019t make any sense. Even if you know the meaning of each individual word, the phrase might sound like gibberish. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, you read about a couple that plans on a having a vacation, and, while discussing the destination, the woman says, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Das ist mir Wurst<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. In both situations you have come across idioms (set expressions with a particular meaning that differs from the meaning of each individual word). <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDas ist mir Wurst\u201d means \u201cI don\u2019t care\u201d, although its literal translation is \u201cIt\u2019s all sausage to me\u201d. \u201cIch bin der Hans im Gl\u00fcck\u201d means \u201cI\u2019m the lucky one\u201d, but translated word for word it means \u201cI am the lucky Hans\u201d.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Idioms reflect national identity and make a language metaphorical and emotional. That\u2019s why by learning common German idioms you will understand the language better, make your speech more diverse and get a much deeper insight into German culture. In the past he used to symbolize a simple German man, then a true patriot of Germany. In the modern world he is widely used to describe a silly and na\u00efve person.<\/span><br \/><b>Auf der B\u00e4renhaut liegen <\/b>(to lie on a bear\u2019s skin)<br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means to be lazy and do nothing. This idiom became famous thanks to a song composed by students in the 19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century.<\/span><br \/><b>Ab nach Kassel! \u00a0<\/b>(<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">go away to Kassel)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although in some situations it sounds quite unfriendly, this idiom can be jokingly used among friends. It dates back to 1870 when Napoleon III was sent as a prisoner to the castle located above Kassel \u2013 a German city in the state of Hesse.
