I’d been meaning to watch something in Spanish from Spain for a while, most of what I’d imported so far leaned Latin American, and I wanted to hear the accent shift. The Truthers showed up on my Netflix homepage the same week it hit the global top 10, and the premise pulled me in before the language did: a woman comes home for her mother’s funeral and slowly starts to suspect her own father might be hiding something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Importing it was the same two-minute process I use for everything now. I opened the film on Netflix, switched the subtitles to Spanish, clicked the LingQ browser extension, and the dialogue loaded into my library as a lesson, video and transcript together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This isn’t a beginner film. Where something like a rom-com gives you clean, present-tense dialogue, The Truthers lives in suspicion, half-finished accusations, and a lot of past-tense storytelling as the daughter pieces together what happened. I’d put it at B1 going into B2, comfortable if you can already follow a conversation without subtitles some of the time, rough if you’re still translating sentence by sentence in your head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The reward is worth the difficulty. Family arguments in Spanish move fast and skip a lot of the connecting words a textbook dialogue would spell out, which is exactly the kind of real speech pattern you don’t get from graded readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A few words came up constantly enough in this kind of story that I ended up saving and reusing them well beyond this one film:<\/p>\n\n\n\n desconfianza<\/strong><\/em> \u2014 distrust, suspicion. This one carries the entire plot. It’s not just “not trusting” someone, it’s the noun form, the state of suspicion itself, which Spanish reaches for constantly in ways English usually rephrases as a full sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n encubrir<\/strong><\/em> \u2014 to cover up, conceal. Comes up in almost any mystery or conspiracy plot, and it’s worth knowing the noun form too: encubrimiento<\/em>, a cover-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n delirante<\/strong><\/em> \u2014 delusional, unhinged. Useful for describing a character’s state of mind, and it shows up in everyday Spanish too, not just thrillers, anytime someone’s being described as out of touch with reality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n One thing this film does well for a learner: it shows the difference between how Ruth speaks to strangers, police, doctors, a journalist, all fairly formal, careful Spanish, versus how she speaks to her father, which gets blunt and unguarded fast once the trust breaks down. Watching the same character shift registers depending on who she’s talking to is a much faster way to internalize that difference than being told about formal versus informal Spanish in the abstract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After I’d saved a handful of words from the first twenty minutes, I opened LingQ’s Lynx AI chat and asked it to work desconfianza<\/em> and encubrir<\/em> into a conversation about the plot so far. It did, and hearing them again in a completely different sentence than the one I’d first met them in is exactly the kind of repeated exposure that moves a word from “recognized” to actually known. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The same import method works for any Spanish film or show with subtitles, not just this one. I’ve got My Daughter’s Father queued up next, Mexican Spanish instead of Peninsular, and a completely different register given it’s more melodrama than psychological thriller. After that, I’m curious to go back and watch Elite with Spanish subtitles now that I know The Truthers came from the same writing team, it’ll be interesting to see how much of the tense, secretive dialogue style carries over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you want to try this with something you’re actually planning to watch anyway: install the LingQ browser extension, turn on subtitles in your target language, and click it.
