It’s based on the webtoon Get Schooled, and the premise is simple enough to follow even before your Korean catches up: a fictional government bureau called the ERPB sends inspectors into schools to deal with bullying that’s gone past the point teachers can handle. I’d seen the thumbnail in my recommendations for weeks before I actually watched an episode, and once I did, the case-of-the-week structure made it an easy show to build a routine around.

I imported the first episode into LingQ, watched it once for the story, then went back through it slowly with the transcript.

Getting It Into LingQ

You can import Teach You a Lesson directly from Netflix using the LingQ browser extension. I opened the first episode, switched the subtitles to Korean in Netflix’s own subtitle menu, then clicked the LingQ extension. A couple of minutes later the episode was sitting in my library as a lesson, video and transcript together.

The First Ten Minutes

The opening episode wastes no time. Within the first few minutes you’ve got a bureau director explaining the ERPB’s mandate, a school principal stonewalling him, and an inspector who clearly isn’t interested in being polite about either. The dialogue swings between two registers that don’t usually sit side by side in a single scene: formal institutional Korean from the officials, and blunt, confrontational speech once the inspector actually gets into the school. That contrast turned out to be the most useful thing about the episode. Tapping the same idea expressed politely in one line and dismissively in the next taught me more about Korean’s formality levels than any grammar chart has.

A phrase came up early that I’d guessed the meaning of from the title alone: 참교육, which the show translates loosely as “teach you a lesson,” though the literal sense is closer to “true” or “real” education. Tapping it confirmed what I’d assumed, and also made clear it’s doing double duty as both the show’s title and its central irony.

Where the Session Actually Slowed Down

Scenes set inside the ministry offices were the hardest part. Officials talk over each other in fast, clipped bureaucratic Korean, and a lot of it is dense with institutional vocabulary I hadn’t seen before: terms for authority, jurisdiction, and disciplinary procedure that don’t come up in casual content. I switched to sentence mode for one stretch where three people were arguing about the bureau’s legal standing, and going through it one line at a time turned out to be less about vocabulary and more about simply untangling who was talking to whom.

By the end of the episode I’d saved close to 40 words. 갑질 (gapjil, an abuse of power by someone in a position of authority, which comes up constantly given the show’s whole premise). 은폐 (eunpye, a cover-up, used twice about the same incident from two different angles). 엄벌 (eombeol, severe punishment, the word every inspector reaches for the moment they walk into a new school).

Picking It Back Up on My Phone

I didn’t finish the episode in one sitting. Because Lynx already knew I’d been studying Teach You a Lesson, it could build the conversation around the same words and themes instead of starting from scratch. We talked about expressions like 갑질, 은폐, and 엄벌, and seeing them used in new contexts made them much easier to remember. It felt less like reviewing flashcards and more like continuing the episode with a conversation partner who already knew what I’d been watching.

What’s Next

The case-of-the-week format makes this an easy show to keep coming back to without losing the thread, so I’m planning to work through the rest of the season the same way. After that, I’m curious whether Squid Game holds up as a follow-up. The tone is darker and the vocabulary skews toward survival and desperation rather than institutional authority, which should be a useful contrast.

If you want to try this with a show you’re already watching, the LingQ browser extension works the same way on any Netflix title with Korean subtitles turned on.

Don’t want to import?
