Simply activate closed captioning in your target language and click the icon of the extension. Don\u2019t open another lesson without having installed the browser extension Zhongwen (that\u2019s how you say \u201cChinese\u201d in Chinese). It\u2019s similar to Lingvo Translator+ in that it allows you to <\/span><b>look up words without opening an additional tab<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but with Zhongwen you only have to <\/span><b>hover over the character<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with your cursor.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes the extension even better is that <\/span><b>it recognizes words<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are made up of <\/span><b>more than one character<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I mean, how else should a Chinese beginner know that the characters for \u201celectric\u201d and \u201ctalk\u201d together form the word \u201ctelephone\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/google-translate\/aapbdbdomjkkjkaonfhkkikfgjllcleb?hl=de\"><b>Google Translate<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re just starting out in a new language, navigating a website can be a nightmare. WHY, GOD, WHY?!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Translate to the rescue! <\/span><b>One click on \u201cTranslate Website\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and all my worries disappeared.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/3-1024x751.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Podcasts<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tab. Just what I was looking for.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you\u2019re equipped with grade-A weaponry, let\u2019s talk strategy\u2014aka what you should do when creating LingQs.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Followers of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/lingosteve\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steve Kaufmann<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are probably familiar with his three keys to successful language learning:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe title=\"3 Keys to Speaking Better in a Language\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q6K0u4LlF88?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(1) having the right attitude<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(2) spending enough time with the language<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(3) the ability to notice<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve discovered that the latter is actually a skill that anybody can learn.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Especially in the beginning stages of learning a language you\u2019re bombarded with new concepts: verb forms, tenses, case endings, articles. You can\u2019t expect to master all these things by committing grammar tables to memory. It\u2019s just not going to happen.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do this instead&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LingQ Hack #2<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Save additional information about the word in the <i>Notes<\/i> section<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the sake of simplicity, I\u2019ll illustrate this concept by using an example regarding verb forms. I\u2019ll take you through it step by step, so bear with me.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say, you\u2019re learning Spanish and while going through a lesson on LingQ you see the word \u201cayudar\u00e1\u201d. You know that it\u2019s probably a form of the word \u201cayudar\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to help<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) but you\u2019re not sure which one.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By selecting a community translation, <\/span><b>the system automatically creates tags<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which tell you a whole lot of stuff about the word. In this case, it tells you:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the infinitive of the word is \u201cayudar\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s in the 3rd person singular form (he\/she\/it).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s in the future tense form.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/3-1.png\" alt=\"The Fastest Way to Learn a Language: 8 LingQ Hacks!\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you open a <\/span><b>Spanish verb conjugator<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (simply use Google\u2014there\u2019s tons out there) where you can look up all the forms a verb can take on. You search for the word \u201cayudar\u201d and look for the third person singular in the future tense table.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1-1.png\" alt=\"The Fastest Way to Learn a Language: 8 LingQ Hacks!\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Found it? Great! Now have a look at all the <\/span><b>other persons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (I, you, he\/she\/it, we, you, they). Take note of the <\/span><b>pattern<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> these verb forms follow. Then <\/span><b>copy and paste<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this little table into the <\/span><b><i>Notes<\/i><\/b><b> section<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on LingQ (the bigger box below the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hint<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> box).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/2-1.png\" alt=\"The Fastest Way to Learn a Language: 8 LingQ Hacks!\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><b>Now, what does this do?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Firstly, <\/span><b>you are reminded of the verb forms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the pattern they follow while copying and pasting it into the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> section, and secondly, you are reminded of them every time you see the word in future lessons. I bet you <\/span><b>after a couple of weeks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of constant exposure to verbs in the future tense, <\/span><b>you\u2019ll know instinctively<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when a verb is in its future tense, and how to form the future tense of other verbs.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dilbert creator <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/scottadamssays\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scott Adams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says \u201cYou can get used to anything if you do it long enough\u2014even hanging\u201d. Adapted for our purposes: <\/span><b>\u201cYou can get used to anything if you hear and see it often enough\u2014even case endings, verb tenses and Chinese characters\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I used verb forms for this example but I also recommend doing this for <\/span><b>case endings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><b>Pro tip<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: For those of you who are learning a <\/span><b>Slavic language<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also make sure to include <\/span><b>both aspects of the verb<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the hint. Knowing both aspects of a verb is crucial for mastering Slavic languages so don\u2019t underestimate how much you leave on the table by not saving the second aspect.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some examples from Russian. You\u2019re five minutes in and so far you understood everything! <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMan, I\u2019ve come a long way from literally knowing nothing in the language just a few months ago!\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you think. But then you hear a word that you\u2019ve never encountered before. And there it is again, and again. All of a sudden, the conversation is all about this one word. That\u2019s it. You\u2019re lost. Disappointment sets in.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was me when I was an intermediate in Russian\u2014and it frustrated the hell out of me.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how you solve this:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LingQ Hack #3<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Eliminate All Unknown Words Before Listening to Advanced Content<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You first go through the podcast on LingQ (given you have the transcript) while listening to it at the same time, <\/span><b>eliminate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all the <\/span><b>unknown words<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>re-listen to the podcast<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a few hours later.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the best feeling ever to then re-listen to the podcast and have this eureka moment when you hear a word you didn\u2019t know the meaning of just hours earlier and go, \u201cRight! This word means\u2026!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here at LingQ we swear by compelling content. But I have a feeling that most people haven\u2019t internalized yet that compelling content doesn\u2019t just fall out of the sky. So let me give you a little pep talk on <\/span><b>finding compelling content<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Consider this the language learning equivalent of Alec Baldwin\u2019s ABC speech from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glengarry Glen Ross<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>You have to be a hunter for good content<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You have to be proactive in your search and not rely on what others present to you.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because let&#8217;s be honest people: <\/span><b>This is not a language class!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is not Spanish 101 with Miss Gonzalez who puts together all the materials for you and then serves them on a silver platter. We&#8217;re self-directed language learners! This means we get <\/span><b>eExponentially better results, but also more effort<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is given from our side.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that being said, how do you find compelling content?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LingQ Hack #4<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Find something you&#8217;re obsessed with in your target language<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is absolutely crucial. <\/span><b>Motivation comes and goes. But a genuine interest in a subject will keep you longing for more.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You\u2019ll <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">want<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to spend more time with your target language.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But where do you start? <\/span><b>When in doubt, go with music.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say you like rock music and are learning Portuguese. You\u2019d translate \u201cPortuguese rock music\u201d into Portuguese and search for that term on Google and YouTube.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But more generally, ask yourself this: <\/span><b>What interests do you have in the languages that you already know?<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What about sports? History? That obscure hobby you have? Chess? Cooking? Economics? Psychology? Gardening? Fishing? Financial markets? Computers? Be creative, people!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take whatever field you\u2019re interested in, translate it into your target language and leverage the power of search engines.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not to judge anyone but I have to share this cautionary tale with. <\/span><b>This is what happens when you don&#8217;t have anything you genuinely like in your target language:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have a group of friends who are all English majors. However, whenever I would make a cultural reference that any English speaker (not to mention English major) should know, their faces just go blank. The reason? They hardly consume any content in English. Their approach to learning English is very technical. Mention the future perfect tense to them and they\u2019ll tell you all about it. Ask them about the Big Apple and they\u2019ll confess they actually prefer smaller ones.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of you\u2019ll say \u201cSo what? They don\u2019t know cultural references, but at least they speak English well.\u201d Wrong! Their language skills are lacking as well. They make lots of mistakes and their vocabulary is quite limited\u2014which comes as no surprise given that they don\u2019t spend any time with the language.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, back to finding content.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An amazing place to start your hunt for content is <\/span><b>YouTube<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s an absolute goldmine for content. Just by using the search function you\u2019re guaranteed to find lots of interesting stuff. But, between the two of us, using the generic search function is for amateurs. LingQ members use <\/span><b>search filters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The most useful powerful filter for LingQ is the <\/span><b><i>Subtitles\/CC<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> filter. With Italian, they\u2019re 90 percent accurate as well, as long as the speaker doesn\u2019t slur his words like the town drunk. For some languages, however, this feature is currently not supported.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is how it\u2019s done:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click on any video that looks interesting to you.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activate auto-generated subtitles.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the LingQ Importer extension to turn the video into a lesson.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thank God for us language learners, more and more podcast creators are publishing transcripts to their podcast episodes. And I figured out a way to find them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LingQ Hack #7<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Quote search a sentence out of a podcast you want the transcript for on Google<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case you didn&#8217;t know, if you Google search a phrase that\u2019s encompassed by <\/span><b>quotation marks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Google will display <\/span><b>only search results that contain <\/b><b><i>that exact phrase<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So let me tell you how you can apply this to finding content: if there\u2019s a podcast that you\u2019d like to have transcripts for, <\/span><b>quote-search a sentence out of that podcast on Google<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Listen closely to what\u2019s being said and then turn to Google.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using this technique, I found subtitles to the Chinese show \u7f57\u8f91\u601d\u7ef4 on some obscure forum that I never would have found otherwise.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know, you can\u2019t wait to finally put these tricks into practice. Sure, there\u2019s Chinese content on YouTube but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nowhere near<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as much as on Chinese video-sharing platforms Iqiyi and Youku.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out which websites and platforms are the most popular where your target language is spoken.
