Anime is one of those cultural phenomenons that doesn\u2019t seem to go away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dragon Ball, Pok\u00e9mon, and Naruto are not only popular in Japan, they\u2019ve also cemented their names at the top of the pop culture ranks here in North America.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>impact<\/span><\/a> Japan has had on North America shouldn\u2019t be understated and as a result, it shouldn\u2019t surprise you that the Japanese language continues to grow in popularity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reddit\u2019s \/r\/Japanese community has 300,000 subscribers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I\u2019ve been studying Japanese for nearly two years now and consuming anime has been a big part of my study routine. Thanks to the internet, anime is more accessible than ever before. However, finding <\/span>good<\/span><\/i> anime for learning Japanese can be tricky. By good, I mean content that\u2019s free, comes with transcripts, and high quality.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this post, I\u2019m going to introduce you to several resources that will let you learn Japanese<\/a> with anime. I\u2019ll go over the pros and cons for each resource so you can decide which one is right for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Learn<\/a><\/p>\n

Anime on YouTube<\/b><\/h2>\n

Pros<\/strong><\/p>\n

The amount of content you can find on YouTube is endless, especially when it comes to anime. You\u2019ll have no problem finding short clips that are easy to consume. Also, there are channels like <\/span>TOHO animation<\/span><\/a> that upload full-length episodes in 1080p!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"TOHO\"<\/p>\n

Cons<\/strong><\/p>\n

YouTube has a setting that allows you to toggle closed captioning on and off. This is extremely useful, especially if those closed captions are manually written. Unfortunately, most anime-based YouTube channels only come with auto-generated closed captions. That means they\u2019re bound to be filled with mistakes. This isn\u2019t helpful when you want to follow along and read the dialogue (or import the content into LingQ – more on that in a bit).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"TOHO\"<\/p>\n

Pro-tip<\/b><\/p>\n

Zero to Hero<\/span><\/a> is an excellent site that curates YouTube videos that come with manually-written closed captions to help you improve your reading comprehension. Check it out!<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Anime\"<\/p>\n

Animelon<\/b><\/h2>\n

Pros<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve <\/span>written<\/span> about Animelon<\/a> in the past. It\u2019s an excellent resource for Japanese learners. The library is full of popular anime which come with Japanese subtitles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Animelon\"<\/p>\n

Cons<\/strong><\/p>\n

Animelon doesn\u2019t have the vast amount of anime that YouTube does. Also, the site has been facing some tough times recently and it\u2019s uncertain how long it will be up for. Best to use it while you still can!<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/h2>\n

Anjsub & Anisub<\/b><\/h2>\n

Pros<\/strong><\/p>\n

Like Animelon, both Anjsub<\/a> and Anisub<\/a> come with full-length anime series that you can watch and read (thanks to their Japanese subtitles). The content is high-quality and it seems that both sites are regularly updated.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Anime\"<\/p>\n

Cons<\/strong><\/p>\n

Once again, compared to YouTube, the amount of anime you\u2019ll find on these sites is limited. Also, beware of popups!<\/span><\/p>\n

Anime on Netflix<\/b><\/h2>\n

Pros<\/strong><\/p>\n

Netflix comes with an excellent selection of anime which you can watch in Japanese. You can also turn on Japanese subtitles. Content is high-quality and updated regularly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Cons<\/strong><\/p>\n

Unlike the other resources mentioned above, Netflix isn\u2019t free.<\/span><\/p>\n

How to Learn Japanese with Anime and LingQ<\/b><\/h2>\n

Using YouTube, Netflix<\/a>, or any of the other resources I\u2019ve mentioned above, you can import your favorite anime into LingQ and create your own interactive lessons. Here\u2019s how using the LingQ desktop app. (Please note, you can also <\/span>import content into LingQ using your mobile device<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

Download and install LingQ\u2019s browser extension (<\/span>Chrome<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0 <\/span>Safari<\/span><\/a>, or <\/span>Firefox<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

Afterwards, head over to one of the websites mentioned above, open a video, click the LingQ extension, label your course, and hit the import button.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a few seconds, LingQ will import your anime and turn it into an interactive lesson.<\/span><\/p>\n

I personally love the fact that I have all my favorite anime in one place. It\u2019s a pain to keep navigating websites and going through different content. Also, by keeping things organized, I\u2019m able to save tons of time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Learn<\/p>\n

Also, LingQ is optimized to give you the best reading experience possible. With one click, you can look up new words and phrases. Save your vocabulary, create flashcards, and use LingQ\u2019s built in SRS system for review. You can listen to the anime\u2019s audio as you read along and <\/span>create playlists<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can you learn Japanese from Anime?<\/b><\/h2>\n

This is a question that I always hear beginner learners ask. The short answer, yes. Many Japanese language learners have done it and so can you. Anime can teach you how to sound like a native speaker, introduce you to vocabulary that your Japanese friends may not even know, and also give you a better understanding of Japanese culture.<\/span><\/p>\n

As <\/span>Steve Kaufmann<\/span><\/a> has said countless times, you need to enjoy the language learning process – and the best way to do that is to learn from content you love.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to the Internet, you\u2019re a click away from finding anime (and any other kind of content for that matter) that caters towards your interests.
