Thank you, of course. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer seems pretty straightforward until you consider all the variations you can use: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks, thanks a lot, thank you so much, thanks a million<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the list goes on. So if you want to say \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thank you<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 in Japanese, you also need to know the variations and when different phrases fit and when they don\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So in this post we\u2019ll go over how to say thank you in Japanese. We\u2019ll talk about social context and structure as well as how to thank someone for a specific action.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Very Versatile Arigat\u014d (\u3042\u308a\u304c\u3068\u3046\uff09<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve studied Japanese, then you\u2019ve probably already heard the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arigat\u014d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before. When expressing gratitude in Japanese, you\u2019ve got to know this word. By itself, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arigat\u014d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used mostly with family and friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u3042\u308a\u304c\u3068\u3046 \u2018Thank you\u2019<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>arigat\u014d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arigat\u014d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a very old word in Japanese and has kind of odd etymology when you dig into it. The first part <em>ari<\/em> comes from the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aru<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u3042\u308b) meaning \u2018to be\/to exist.\u2019 The second part <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gat\u014d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is from an old word meaning &#8216;difficult&#8217;. So saying <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arigat\u014d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means that you\u2019re acknowledging that some uncommon or difficult occurrence has happened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The phrase <i>arigat\u014d<\/i>\u00a0is almost always written in hiragana. It\u2019s hard to really translate the different sense that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arigat\u014d gozaimasu <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gives, but you should understand that it\u2019s important.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Arigat\u014d Past and Present<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have noticed that the phrase <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arigat\u014d gozaimasu <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has the <em>-masu<\/em> ending for verbs in the present tense. At the same time, the phrase may be put in the past tense with <em>-mashita<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u3042\u308a\u304c\u3068\u3046\u3054\u3056\u3044\u307e\u3057\u305f<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Arigat\u014d gozai-mashita<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what\u2019s the difference?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You use <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arigat\u014d gozaimasu <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a current action and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arigat\u014d gozaimashita <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a completed action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say that someone lends you their bike for the day. You\u2019d say <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arigat\u014d gozaimasu <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when accepting the bicycle. This involves the words <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">makoto-ni<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u8aa0\u306b\u3042\u308a\u304c\u3068\u3046\u3054\u3056\u3044\u307e\u3059 \u2018Thank you very much\u2019<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Makoto-ni arigat\u014d gozai-mashita<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will almost exclusively hear this in Japanese stores and some workplace situations . Doing this is a bit more tricky and involves three parts. For this construction, you\u2019ll need to put the verb in the te-form. With close friends and family, you can use more quick and simple expression to say \u2018thank you\u2019 in Japanese.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u014dmo (\u3069\u3046\u3082)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the same <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d\u014dmo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as that in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d\u014dmo arigat\u014d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and by itself d\u014dmo can also express gratitude. In this form, it roughly translates to a simple \u2018thanks.\u2019 As such, you should only use it in informal situations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Borrowing from English &#8211; Sanky\u016b (\u30b5\u30f3\u30ad\u30e5\u30fc)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When people are being really cute they might say <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sanky\u016b.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The expression comes from the English \u2018thank you\u2019 but people only use it as a slang term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s fun about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sanky\u016b<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is that you can see it written in several ways. The first part <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">san<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sounds like the number 3 and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ky\u016b<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the name of the letter and the number 9.
