We\u2019ll cover basic introductions, how to say thank you and how to ask how someone\u2019s doing. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to start chatting to anyone in the Netherlands, Northern Belgium, or Aruba, you\u2019ve got to know these essential Dutch phrases!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Basic Dutch Phrases: Introducing Yourself<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with thank you, Dutch has several ways of introducing yourself. Sometimes people use the phrase \u2018mijn naam is\u2026\u2019 which matches the English expression \u2018my name is\u2026.\u2019 However, Dutch also has the verb \u2018heten\u2019 used specifically for giving names. As such, people usually ask about and exchange names using this verb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mijn naam is John. &#8211; My name is John<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Wat is je naam? &#8211; What is your name?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hoe heet u? &#8211;\u00a0 What is your name?\u00a0 (more formal)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Hoe heet je? &#8211; What is your name? So if you\u2019re talking to multiple people, you need to change the grammar a bit: use the pronoun \u2018jullie\u2019 instead of \u2018je\u2019 or \u2018u\u2019, and the verb \u2018heten\u2019 must conjugate accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hoe heten jullie? &#8211; What are your names?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Wat zijn jullie namen? &#8211; What are your names?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The verb \u2018heten\u2019 can also be used to explain the names of others. This applies both to people and animals. We generally use the phrase \u2018hoe gaat het\u2019 which literally means \u2018how goes it.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hoe gaat het? &#8211;\u00a0 How are you? (How goes it with you all)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also use this construction to ask about other people:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hoe gaat het met Janneke?\u00a0 &#8211; How\u2019s Janneke? (How goes it with Janneke)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Hoe gaat het met Jip en Jane? &#8211; How are Jip and Janneke (How goes it with Jip and Jan)<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><strong>Culture Tip<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some English speaking countries, the question \u2018how are you?\u2019 is asked without the expectation of an in depth answer. This is simply not so in Dutch. When you ask how someone is, you can expect them to answer honestly, since the expectation is that you wouldn\u2019t have asked if you didn\u2019t want to know.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Asking for Things in Dutch<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suppose you are at a restaurant or a cafe and you suddenly realize that you don\u2019t know how to ask for anything other than saying its name. Don\u2019t worry! Asking for something in Dutch is quite simple. For one you can say what you want and simply follow it with the word \u2018alstublieft\u2019 (please).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Een koffie en een stroopwafel, alstublieft. &#8211; A coffee and a stroopwafel, please.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Een biertje, alstublieft. &#8211; A beer, please.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also politely request something with the tried-and-true formula \u2018ik wil graag\u2026\u2019 This more or less means \u2018I would like\u2026\u2019 and should work in more situations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ik wil graag een haring en wittebrood. &#8211; I\u2019d like a herring on white bread.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Ik wil graag een glas water. &#8211; I\u2019d like a glass of water.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last expression is \u2018mag ik&#8230;\u2019 which translates to \u2018may I\u2026\u2019 You can usually say what you want after this without needing to add a proper verb. Of course, if you want to add some additional politeness to your request, you can tack \u2018alstublieft\u2019 on at the end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sorry, mag ik een koffie? &#8211; Sorry, can I have a cup of coffee?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Mag ik een groene thee, alstublieft? &#8211; Can I have a green tea, please?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Using Your Key Phrases<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you know how to say hello, introduce yourself and ask how someone is, you\u2019re all ready to try out your new phrases on someone who speaks Dutch. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <strong>oefening baart kunst<\/strong> (practice makes perfect), it can be hard to practice Dutch sometimes. Most people who speak Dutch, whether in the lowlands or in the Caribbean, speak another language and are quite proud of it.
